Just came across this newly updated "Half Life 2 & Source Engine Tweak" Guide:

Page 1: Introduction
Page 2: Essential Optimization
Page 3: Troubleshooting Tips
Page 4: Patches Mods & Steam
Page 5: In-Game Settings
Page 6: In-Game Settings (Pt.2)
Page 7: Advanced Tweaking
Page 8: Adv. Tweaking (Pt.2)
Page 9: Adv. Tweaking (Pt.3)
Page 10: Neat Stuff & Concl.

http://www.tweakguides.com/HL2_1.html

"This guide has been significantly updated as of HL2: Episode 2. Importantly, the tweaks in this guide also apply to every other Source Engine-based game including all Half Life 2 variants, CounterStrike: Source, Day of Defeat: Source, Vampire: The Masquerade, Team Fortress 2 and Portal."

Useful overview Idea
