I remember coming across a player who would do this to avoid losing points. Unfortunately, there is, I believe, a 50 point deduction every time a player switches to spectate mode.

that 100 swaps between spectate and play were almost all in one session of half an hour........ had the ******* in my sights at least a dozen times only to see himn disapear before the coup de grace......... to say I was annoyed is an understatement.
