I have a FRITZ!Box 2170 router but I dont know if you can buy this outside of germany. just dont forget to install a tool like netlimiter to limit the down/up speed for your father so you can play online without lag. I have limited the 2nd pc in our house so that I can play online anytime.

yes, but it should be a wired one. wireless is still in its beta stage in my opinion and should be avoided.

Hmm, why beta? As long as u secure the AP properly (WPA encryption, MAC filtering etc) it works smoothly. Used to play online games like HL2DM and other via wireless connection, was fine for me. If you don't use wireless, switch it off.
Ofc it's only useful if you have a laptop and maybe other devices (like media streamers, PSP etc).
I'm using a (arther old) DLINK Router incl. ADSL Modem/Wireless, wors still fine. it also has severeal LAN ports, so could connect other devices directly (lke a shared drive, or a network printer).

It's all depend if your modem is already routing or not, the max up/down of your internet connection and plenty of others network factors.
A switch doesn't manage the non-local traffic, most of the routeurs have a 4 ports switch included.
If your connection is over 55mbs don't not use wireless (because the network speed will be reduced to 55mbs).
Good luck.

until now you are the first one who told me that wireless works fine. I only heard and saw people having very bad problems with the connection breaking down etc.
some contra for wireless:
-may not reach full internet speed
-may give lag and high ping
-may break down freaquently cutting the connection of programs who are online

One important point is surely your personal point. If your whole neighbourhood still uses different WLAN´s you will most likeley run in trouble with them. Frequency collisions, security issues and so on. My WLAN router showed me 6 other WLAN´s within 300 metres distance.
If you live more in a smaller village you will have not so much problems and your chances are good to build a stable WLAN.
Pointing the theoretical speed of WLAN. Most router never reach the promised 54MBit in real. Not even near because the manufacturers measuring is theoretical and based on perfect signals at enormous low distances.
You wont even get 70% of this speed in real as soon the distance gets bigger and other wlans are present.
WLAN is comfortable for devices like Notebook or PDA - just to check mails or browse the INet from the couch. The main PC should still be connected per wire. Gaming and downloads will work much better in most cases but it all depends on your internet speed and the other factors.
