Question of the week #2 |
|
Alright, this time it's rather a riddle, there is an exact answer and the one with the correct explanation gets the points
I took this one out of a book, so maybe (hopefully not) some of u know the answer already......
ok here is the story:
Imagine: We have 2 people. They are twins, and the name of one of them is John.
What we know about them: One of them never says the truth (so he's always lying lol, but it's not necessarily John who is always lying)
John commited a crime.
During the process, the judge trys to find out who of the twins John is.
The judge asked the first of the twins: "Are you John?"
"Yes I am" was the answer.
"Are you John?" Asked the judge to the second of the twins.
The answer was either Yes or No, and with this information, the judge knew who John was.
Is John the first or the second of the twins?
Of course you have a 50% chance to get the right answer, but i want an explanation
have fun

What about the other twin (can we call him billy?)? Does he always tell the truth? Or can he lie (i have done similar questions to this before... need all the info before i can answer )

ok if u want to call him billy, i can only say that he is a normal human being. If he would always say the truth i would have said it

judge to the second of the twins. The answer was either Yes or No |
The 2nd twin can give the answer yes or no. Only John could give a yes or no answer. So first twin is the brother (who lied when he said yes) and the second twin is John.

hmm actually i mean that the second twin said either yes or no, we don't know what he said. We only know that the judge knew who John was, when he heard the answer of the second twin! I hope that you get what i mean... and i hope that i understood the way u wanted to solve the problem. I don't want to detail too much because the others should also have the chance to find an answer
btw rublis, u deserve one point for that

I think I understand you...
The other twin always lies. So no matter what, he would answer yes. The judge knows that. So does his brother, John. John can say yes (truth) or no (lie). He would lie (because he committed the crime) and would not say yes. So the first answerer is the brother, the second answer would be John.
Or else the answer is 3.456

I dont believe there is any way of knowing for certain!
If the first twin said yes then he could either be lying or telling the truth. The later meaning he is infact John, the former meaning he is not.
The second twins answer could also be yes or no (because we dont know who is who). If the 2nd twin answer yes, one of them must definetly be lying, but the judge cannot possibly know who on the information given since either could be lying or telling the truth.
I believe John could be either the 2st or 2nd twin. Depending on the information given from the second twin, john could still be either... Either this or i have missed something..

Well if john committed a crime, and he knows that his brother will lie (and say he's john), then why would he say yes? That way his brother might be found guilty and he can walk away.

So there is no possible way to know for definete! John might lie to get his twin done instead of him.. or he would lie to protect his twin too. One of them must always lie, but there is no possible way of knowing if its John or billy (are we sticking with billy?)

MMM, what happened to my post must have gone through a portal somewhere or I have put it in the wrong place AGAIN.
I know the answer I have seen it before so I am not going to spoil the thread.
The only thing I need to lie about,
Is the size of my dick,
If I told the truth,
Nobody would believe me.

Billy, John and the other one all worked at Burger King and were all sporting badges with their name on:
"Hi, my name is JOHN - how can I help"
This is how that geezer knew who was who.

hm u shouldnt look at the problem with a "social" point of view

very correct! but the question was not to find out whether john or billy is always lying, but only to find out who john is

But if one must always lie. Then depending on which twin (1st or 2nd) lies, John could actually be either 1 or 2...

I Have the answer... probably. Spoiler below...
.
.
.
.
.
What matters is that the judge knew from the answer of the second twin.
Take the following scenario:
Twin 2 says Yes:
In which case, since only one of them can be John, one of them is lying. But, we don't know which one it is. It could be Twin 1 or it could be Twin 2. The judge wouldn't know which since the other Twin could tell the truth or lie.
Twin 2 says No:
In this case, they are either both lying or both telling the truth. Since they both can't tell the truth, then they must both be lying. Which means that Twin 1 is not John and Twin 2 is John.
So, since the judge knew which twin was which, Twin 2 must have answered "No" and therefore the judge knew which was which.
If they wanted to keep their identity secret, Twin 2 would have been better off answering "Yes."
Twin 1 is John making Twin 2 Billy
If this is the case, then Twin 1 is telling the truth and Twin 2 would have answered "Yes" also because Twin 2 always lies. But, the judge would not have known who was lying and who was telling the truth so he wouldn't have known which one was which.
At least I'm pretty sure this is the right answer. And no, I haven't read the answer from someplace else.

yes, that's the correct answer
nothing more to add
actually, like dogsoldier already said, the fact that really matters is that the judge knew who John was, after he heard what the second twin said.
what u can do is to draw some kind of "tree" with all the different possbilities. You can cross some of them out because they are impossible. At the end, there are 3 possbilities left. 2 of them can't work, because the judge couldn't know who John was if both would have said yes. So the second said no... etc
hm i don't know if the next question should also be a riddle or rather some philosophical stuff
u can decide
i will do the rating later on.
