I have windows 7 installed for a week now and it does semm faster, escially now i have 64 bit version.
The thing that really annoys me is this security/admin rubbish. I'm pretty much the only one who uses this computer and i get messages click here change these files if your the admin. Why can't they have an option on install to get rid of all this rubbish?

I spent most of the x-mas week testing a i7 platform, a friend of mine gently borrowed me it, cpu, mobo and ram, as im going to build a new pc for him.

So, i tooked the chance to try win 7 ultimate 64, as i had an empty hdd around.

And this way, i could use the 2 GTX260 i have at home and run them on SLi.

Everything runned flawless, no issues at all, no drivers issues to, and, the little software i used, no problems to, my soundcard, Creative X-fi worked just fine to. and the scaling of the SLi was great, as long as the game/aplication used SLi, i had at least a good solid 90% performance increase.

The games i runned, didnt tested or benchmarked all:
Crysis, Crysis Wars, GTA 4, Stalker Clear Sky, Dirt 2, Css, Hl2dm, L4D2.

No issues at all, except, dirt 2 doesnt suport SLi yet, and GTA 4 dont seem to suport it to..... i didnt find valid info on that, in my tests, there was maybe 20% performance increase here....

Compared to Vista Ultimate 64 i was using before, i didnt noted it was faster, in general windows use. felt pretty much the same, but, some things really stand out, it is far more stable, didnt have a single issue, then, the ram that was using, was at least 500mb less.
Took half the time to install compared to vista, and takes half the time to load in reboot.

Vista ultimate 64, just after a reboot, in windows enviroment, was already using 1,5GB ram, while Win 7 Ultimate 64 uses 900MB to 1GB. My brother says that his version, i think its the home premium or something, and he says it uses only 700MB.

Vista had way to many useless features and aplications, in 7 they cuted at least half of those useless features. and actually add a very cool one, as the XP enviroment, i havent tried that yet.

That UAC u mention, it is indeed anoying, but u are lucky u didnt experience it in Vista.......

The other thing, that was a big improvement over Vista, is the disk defragment tool, in Vista, it was complete fail, so much that i had to install new software to do that. and i give much importance to this point. as im always moving files, and need a good defragment tool.

So, when i returned to my platform, and got back to Vista again, and i installed GTA 4 and failed to run... i just formated my disk, and said bb vista!! hello win 7.

Wink

I have been running W7 home premium 64 bit for arround two weeks now.
I migrated directly from Xp pro which was a fairly recent clean install.
My core i7 only came alive when I made the transition.
I like the extra security features and do not find the in the slightest annoying. I used heavily protected network at work and scecurity warnings are a frequent because I have incomming email from outside our WAN.
While my system is idle I use 400mb system ram on one cpu core and the cpu clock multiplier auto stepped back to from 20x to 12x. This is quite a substantial power saving.
I recon that from power up to playing dm takes about 1/4 the time it used to running Xp. If you installed over an existing system you will find a very substantial folder called "Windows.old" on your hard drive. This will slow you down if you have small hard drive. I found I could delete all but 2 files in the folder and this freed up 54gb of disk space. It is however worth checking the contents of the folder because all the files are not archived. This can save you time downloading 32 bit apps if you have saved the intallation files.

I think the Windows 7 experience can best be described as a breath of fresh air.

Ive been on Windows 7 64-bit for a while now having come up from XP 32-bit.

Love it, it's fast and I've had no compatibility issues bar one USB drive which used built in software for security purposes.

Main issue I had was just learning the 'layout' having (thankfully) skipped Vista.

I've just updated from Vista 64 Ultimate to Win7 64 Ultimate.

Remarkably painless. Took 3hrs. I am pleased so far.

*Edit: aaaah - none my source games work anymore...

windows 7 isnīt as fast as xp was, general tasks in windows and firefox sometimes can take longer to finish, and when it does slow down its rather annoying because it worked fine with xp. windows 7 starts quicker though. I also really donīt like the default windows 7 look and usage, my "productivity" is greatly reduced with the basic setup, why change something that we got used to for years? I changed mine to look almost exactly like xp with the quicklaunchbar (that stays there when I open a program, not the windows 7 version that transforms the link to the program), showing programs with their names, having the "show desktop" back on the left side and a link to "my computer". Iīm not done, Iīll try to revert to the old startmenu as well. another thing that annoys me is the new sound mixer. I have no sound under 5% volume. in xp I used 2-3 but now I canīt reduce the volume to the value I want unless I set the volume in all the apps. also the loudness for "wave" is gone, I used to set this to 50% to get a more precise sound settings. now the minimum is 5%/100%. my keyboard has volume buttons that go in steps of 3% so I can have 3 (no sound), 6,9,etc. again, why did they get rid of "wave"?

and here is how it looks:
