nVidia GeForce GTX 275 or 260 (cheaper).
ATI Radeon HD 5850 or 4890 (cheaper).

i would recomend just the same.
specially the GTX260, cause u can get it very cheap now, here i found a couple of them at 125-130€.
i have tried recently a HD4890, the card is great, but i was disapointed with its noise and temperatures, so, i got a GTX260 again. and i have another 1 in my fathers pc, that i pretend to steal, and do SLi.
but, any of them, u will be happy, i run everything maxed with the GTX260, at 1920x1200, 4xAA, 16xAF. except for crysis....
In L4D2 the game runs just smoth.

almost all high-end cards are loud and hot, that has always been the case. if you want performance you have to make your ears suffer or make your purse suffer by buying watercooling.

I would recommend a card but to do so I would need to know what
hardware was in you case .
have you PCIE or AGP .
Also some cards need a bigger power supply.

3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 support NVIDIA SLI Tech @ dual x16 or 3-way@x8, x8, x 8
2 x PCIe1.0 x1, PCIex1_1 (black) is compatible with audio slot

ATI 5850; anything else would be daft imo since you'll get DX11 too and no other card will offer this atm.

ATI 5850 is meant to be faster than current cards.
It will take about 6 months for any worth wile directx 11
games to be released and by then nvidia will have a new card
out .
for sure there will be some real bargains around
a nvidia 260 is £120 on dabs
a XFX HD4870 750M 512MB is only £91
the 5850 is £200 and in the real world you wont be able to see
the difference my advice is buy a cheaper card for now
and when a game comes out that you cant play then buy
a new directx 11 card .

True in most respects but would you really want to upgrade again in 6 months or so?
If your budget allows surely its better to grab the 5850 now since it is fast and DX11 capable?

it´ll run fine. there are no special sapphire only drivers, why would they invest money to create drivers when they can offer the free catalyst ones?
