No way to launch any game |
|
Hi everyone,
I need another time your help (it's gonna be usually). It is a friend of mine who wanted to start playing Half Life 2 Deathmatch, and who can't because of some issues.
When he starts the game he sees the Valve's video, then the loading menu, then nothing. Black screen, then go back to Windows. It occures with every game (he tried Warcraft III, Dark Messiah and Deathmatch, everytime the same thing).
Here are his computer specifications :
Operating System: Windows XP Professional
Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) 3000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.0GHz
Memory: 1024MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c
Video Card: ATI Radeon X1650 Series
Display Memory: 512.0 MB
Ask me if you need something else to know (I feel like I've forgot something..).
I hope somone will be able to help him, it would be nice for me to crush him in a killbox

He has the latest Catalyst and Frameworks.NET
In fact he just formated his computer last night so everything should be fine about the software part.

He uses Avast, and the problem occures with every games, even those off line.
It doesn't come from the RAM, he checked it and everything is fine. We will see what happens with formatting.

I think it's the card or the driver software, I only say that cause I hate ATI cards. I've had too much problems with them and alot of other people also. Go on steam forums I remember that I saw a help topic about blacks screens on steam games at game start up.

Check in the Avast settings. Way in the back there is a game setting. It says check for full screen applications. make sure that is checked. I had a similar problem a long time ago where evertime avast would start scanning steam it would minimize the game.
Might work.

It might be the card, indeed. About the software, we will see after formatting.

It sounds like a graphics driver problem, have you tried reinstalling the latest driver? or even rolling back to the previous one to rule it out of being graphics related.
I've had a few problems with ATi drivers/software updates and found that the best solution is to completely wipe all ATi software from my system then install a fresh copy of the latest software.
If you want to try that I recommend using www.ccleaner.com in safe mode
also check that your sound card driver and DirectX up to date as well?

Right click Icon, Program settings , troubleshooting, Check the box marked check for full screen apps.
This may do nothing for you but it worked for me,
and your symptoms are close to mine. For some reason the animated icon was acting like a pop-up.
I recommend ccleaner also. it will remove any leftover trash.
I hope it helps.

As I have already said, he uses the latest ATI softwares. He also uses CCleaner from the beggining. His computer is clean concerning the softwares. Might be the hardware again but I don't know how to test that.

If you have an on-board card you could unplug the ATI and use
the on-board, and see what happens. Just to see if you can get further
(I'm grabbing at straws here)

either the card is screwed or you have a problem with direct x. Because this only occures at games the assumption is near that its a direct x problem (ati cards are well known for that kind of problems). To try if its like this download a benchmark like 3Dmark06 (a free version) and look if that works.
Another tip. Maybe the new drivers are shit try removing the new one and get a old version (maybe from the original graphikcard cd). This wont be the end solution but would get you much nearer to the goal if the games work with the older version good luck

He could try Driver Cleaner Professional this removes all graphic's card drivers and it's free. Then reinstall the drivers from graphic's card disc and update drivers from the ATI site. I used it before.
(make sure your friend reads the readme first)

Evertything is fine for him now, he just installed Catalyst from the CD which were with his graphic card.
Thanks from him to them who have tried to help him.
I have tried to install the drivers from the original CD in order to fix my problem, but obviously, luck doesn't happen to everyone.

You didn't say if he had tried bench mark. On my ati card i had it would get part way through the bench mark program and freeze or crash. I found the problem was with the tempreture management program that came with the card. I uninstalled this application and had no more problems?

Sounds like it was only about the Catalyst driver. I don't think he has tried bench mark. But anyway, the good thing is that it works now.
By the way, I have fixed my own problem too, by setting my card from AGP 8x to AGP 4x.
Everything is fine now. Thanks again for the help.
