So I was curious. Say you have an online game available in different formats like PC, PS2, XBox. Can you play online with other gamers who use different formats?

If not why not?

If so, big toe?

One of the first instances where console vs pc happened was with the dear Quake 3 arena. Players on the sega dreamcast could play online using their consoles vs players on the pc on special dreamcast servers if memory servers me correct it was 8 players maxed which was lower than that of the pc.

There hasn't been any cross platform gaming of that sort for a while, fastforward today. Microsoft has been developing an xbox live like enviroment for the pc incorporating the infrastructure they built for the xbox/xbox360 which is xbox live. Well it's creatively called... Microsoft Live. One of the first games that will have xbox360 vs pc is called *drum rolls* Shadowrun. This game is very hyped and is said to equal the playing field between pc and xbox360, I am very curious on how that will be accomplished.

It is also rumoured that a massive multiplayer online shooter based on the unreal 3 engine called Huxley will have such a feature. *looks super good*

That's about it really, don't want to bore you with the details.

im sick of people questioning shimmy about being in the top 10. Shimmy is a damn good player. he puts the time in on tsgk servers against good players. shimmy pwns with the stick too and that is where the 50 points multiplier is at. i played shimmy on centrum yesterday and he is an honorable player too. i have to admit i was playing very dishonorable and i apologize. i tried stick to stick a few times and lose so next time shimmy show stick i physic spam or nade spam also i would wait for the 3 or 4 person stick fight and chunk a nade in the middle. it was very cheap of me. the point is that shimmy didnt complain or call me bad names he just stuck to his game and he still came out on top. i have a lot of respect for shimmys gameplay. also he is a super cool super nice duder. i hope you arent mad at me for yesterday. from now on in regards to stick, if you show me yours ill show you mine.

Indeed. Shimmy is very fun player and a Ninja with stick Smile .
He deserves his place Wink

well for starters he isnt 438 th player on servers xD

Secondly he is a quake demon which leads us to the other story of his gaming "career", he is a monster player that played quake 3 .
And if you know any por quakers (i mean class of gameplay, not like in a job) tahn you should know why he is so good.

If not PM me and ill hit you with the details V_.

Diet asked why not Question Question

There is no reason why cross system gaming can't work. At the end of the day, there is not a great deal of information that is actually sent on line. Position, movement and events etc. The game and maps are on the computer/console. It is how the individual system handles the information is the stumbling block.
A standard gaming format for they way these instructions are handled is what
is needed. If this existed, then for on line gaming, there would be nothing to chose between the console and the PC other than brute power.
Under these circumstances, there would be no reason for any system loyalty
and no reason for a household to have a console and a PC.

Ah, sorry there are some games which make it on to more than one format. That makes commercial sense for the independant game company. I was not however aware that you could match a console and a PC on the same server. I stand corrected.
The commercial aspect of making a Playstation compatable with a PC in online gaming does not make sense. Obviously Sony want everybody to buy and use a Playstation as their online gaming machine. You don't need a Playstation if your PC can do the same job. Smile
Good games witten specificaly for one format will never apear in another format if say for example Nintendo hold the intellectual property rights to the game. (You wanta play the game buy a Nintendo)

What I was geting at was to make cross system gaming a real possibilty, a universal game engine is required, preferrably in the public domain. The same console/pc game written to comply to a universal game engine format should automaticaly be online compatable.

I can't imagine how you could balance a FPS between console and computer.

Well you could, but you'd have to set up all the console players with a mouse and keyboard to give them a chance. I'm impressed with how well the high end Halo players adapt to the limitations of the controller, but when you watch their counterparts in CS or Quake...it's like the Halo games are being played in slow motion.
