half life is called the time that it takes for a quantity of radioactive elements to desintegrate half of the number of its cores which were present at the date t=0.
for example, u have a certain quantitiy of radioactive elements. at the time t=0 u have n cores. at the time t= half life u will have n/2 cores.
thats why a graphic of the number of radioactive cores during time is always a descending exponential function.
u can calculate the half life of an element if u use the formule:
t1/2 = ln(2) / lambda
lambda is the half life sign
i used this formule once as my in game name lol
btw i dont know if u translate "noyau" by "core"!
@killa: seems like u havent been in terminale S

The half life of carbon is how they put a date on archaeological stuff too I believe.

technically the decay ratio of an element would be chemistry.
sry im a geek

Well, now the names make some normal sence to me
i tohught the names were picked By the games main charecters
So may be im a dumb guy >_< cuz i didnt get the whole game story picture
lol and i learned that if halhlife is t1/2 = ln(2) / lambda
THEN! Half-Life 2 is t1/2 = ln(2) / lambda * 2
=>t1=ln(2)/lambda....
Ok im confuzed....Point is that halflife 2 is = to Life

I can't remember too much, but I did alot of this stuff in my Integrated Chemistry and Physics class. It's very interesting when you get the formulas down. (now if only I could remember them)

did anyone notice that little symbol in the equation to the left of the table on the wikipedia site? the denominator in the fraction. it looks like the lambda symbol. too funky

Not sure M8 - did BSc in Applied Phys for a few years (before I bombed out) and I recall it relating more to molecular phys than chemistry. I'll check with the Missus (she passed).

the lambda is the decay constant. or half life
half life in lay mans terms means the time it takes for half the material to change into another material or gotten rid off. we use that in the medical world. As in the time it takes the body to get rid of a certain drug. so paracetamol or panadol has a half life of 1 to 4 hours. it takes the body 1 to 4 hours to metabolize half the paracetamol taken up by the body.

Not quite. Carbon dating deals with unstable isotopes of carbon present in the atmosphere, and ends up in organic materials. There is an isotope of Carbon which is less stable than other isotopes and will decay over time. Based on how much this isotope has decayed into a more stable isotope, the length of time that has passed since the organic material was taken out of the ecosystem can be determined.
Isotopes are versions of the same element (same element meaning the atom has the same number of protons) but varying amounts of neutrons. This is contrast to radioactive decay, where the vast number of protons in an unstable atom will fall off and create completely different elements.
I hope that makes sense. Right now I'm flying high off of vicodin since I just had a vasectomy and my nuts hurt.... perhaps that's sharing too much.

For example HL: Blue Shift is barney playing the role, He has a blue suit and helmet
Opposing Force means that the role is played by the opposing force of gordon and its allies, sorta like their point of view (there is a mod called Point Of View btw, playing as a vort)
HL2: Aftermath as the aftermath of what happened in the Citadel
i knew the codename of EP2 and EP3 but i forgot about it :\
as for Decay, i know what it is but i dont know what i means, uhm.. i dont know what Decay has to do with playing as the guys that delivered the specimen is the test chamber
theres alot of meanings, and everyone may have diferent theories but this is mine^^

Just to add one thing to what DogSoldier said, Carbon 14 is the isotope, and it's generated far above the Earth when cosmic rays hit Nitrogen. Neat stuff
