i was reading the steam forums about this problem and some seem to think it may take several days to restore power to the area from what they had seen on the news.

There is a storm at Bellevue and the Power copagny cannot go fix the problem until the wind stops to blow.

And concerning those people connected to TSGK Servers i have no idea how do they can connect without passing by the Steam authentification server... Except if some Steam servers still up and they are lucky.

Ok, not the best news of the day so far, however I think I have a reasonable explanation as to why some people can still play: It is my belief that some people were logged in before this "power cut" and have not yet signed out so they can still play. I dont know, this is more up your alley Osiris, hope they can sort it out soon.

Indeed, if people were connected to Steam before the power outgage they will have their Steam working (was my case until i get a power outgage 2 hours ago Confused) but everytime you connect to a game server your Steam ID is authenticated by the Steam master server and then you get kicked out if the gameserver didn't receive a message from the Steam master server that your steam id has been successfully authenticated.
There is then 2 explaination about those people:
1. They hack, but i doubt that you can connect to an online gameserver with a hacked version of Steam because the authentification is a stuff between the game server and the steam master server only (except if they "spoof" the master server to "bluff" the gameserver).
2. Few Steam servers still up and those people are lucky.

No HL2 for two days or more..... OH MY GOD...... how do i live with out playing untill fixed. I dont know what to say about some people still being able to play but mine was ok untill i signed out to let bendydick play at 7 pm british time at which point we now cant sign back in. thought we might b able to play through xfire but still have to authenticate through steam.. SOD IT Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad will some one put post up as soon as it comes back or there is some news on when it will be fixed.

speaking to my brother about it, he said if there's as many people playing on steam as they say, it could take 24-48 hours just to get the server up and running again, plus the time it takes for the storm to reside...this may be the only time i pay attention to the weather further than 10 miles from my house!

*sigh*
i was so angry thinking someone had stolen my account!
thankyou osiris for showing me this thread.

I´d say no but if it was:
what happens when too many people go in an elevator? it doesn´t move because there is overweight. the servers (if they exist) wouldn´respond anymore at such a high load and crash. its not worth the effort anyway and there is not enough time to hack steam and you would also get into risk to get banned due to hacking steam.

lol all the hl2dm regulars have to find a different game to play while steam is down.(including me) Steam definitely needs backup servers in a different area if the whole thing shuts down due to a storm. Hope it comes back on soon. Flatout 2 isn't keeping me occupied...
