PostPosted: Tue Jul 27, 2010 22:00    Post subject:  Valve wrongly VAC banned MW2 players
Subject description: Causing trouble with our VAC synchronisation system

Why this would be noticed into the Problem Reporting of the TSGK HL2dm Forum, because this actually affected the VAC cheaters list at the TSGK Stats and also the HL2dm Consortium list of VAC banned players.

For a couple of days some MW2 players, 12000 to be exact were VAC banned because of a Valve mistake.
Unfortunatly our system to synchronise the players list with the official VAC bans was active during those days and flagged these players as cheaters.

As always, we are checking some freshly vac synchronised banned players in order to monitor that the system isn't going wild, until yesterday everything was fine, never flagged a player which wasn't VAC banned, but monday we noticed that 1 player was VACed and then checking at the official profile he was not, then a second and a third etc etc.
Nothing was looking wrong at the system and then every line of code were checked, couldn't figure why this went crazy until i found about this article.
http://uk.pc.gamespy.com/pc/call-of-duty-6/1108740p1.html

After veryfication those players were MW2 players, so at the time we were checking after the synchronisation, valve fixed the problem and their profile weren't flagged anymore at Steam.
Not sure yet how many players are currently flagged VAC banned at the stats but this will be fixed fastly as we will rescan every VAC banned players and unflag those who aren't flagged anymore at Steam, should takes a couple of hours.

If you do see your name at the TSGK or Consortium VAC banned players and that you are one of these 12000 lucky players (because they got L4D2 as a gift), you can post here, if not don't worry everything will be fixed.
At least the system is working...
Thanks.

Your a good admin Osiris, must of been odd to see a bigger number of bans then normal.
Also was nice of Valve to give out L4D2 as a sorry to customers.

We resynchronised the VAC banned players for the TSGK Stats and the HL2 Deatchmatch Consortium, it is now fixed.

So it WAS mw2...

Once again Infinity Wards short sight fixed by another company, they still haven't fixed the video issues only ati and nvidia have been working on it and they're more than willing to work with IW.

I haven't seen a developer this bad since funcom.

Your hatred for IW is phenomenal.

It's valve's screw up, admit it!

It was no one's screw up really, if you want to assign blame valve would be the group most deserving. What happened according to Gabe Newell is that steam updated a .dll file during one of it's recent updates, it just so happened that this file was used by mw2. VAC then rightly, given that this was how it was designed to work, banned people who's .dll file appeared to it to be modified. Valve later realised that roughly 12000 people had been banned incorrectly because of their update and gave them l4d2 for free.

Infinity ward chose the wrong anti cheat in the first place, it's designed for dedicated servers.
