I was thinking about getting back into mapping, and maybe I will start by making a killbox in a shipyard, any opinions or advice?

I downloaded Hammer the other day to have a look at mapping and it scared the pants of me so I take my hat off to you.

I know nothing about the technical side of maps but I know what I like in kilboxes.

I think the more variety in gameplay you allow the better. Some suggestions...

A killbox should have a good vertical aspect to it (vertiginous?) so lifts are good (especially fast lifts). In a shipyard, perhaps cranes could be used for the lifts. But not too many levels or it becomes cluttered.

Every strong point should have a weakness. e.g a good sniping location would be nice high up. It's weakness could be that a pipe leads to it. A combine ball or grenade into the pipe would kill the sniper.

Plenty of physics... one or two long steel girders could be useful.

You need a good area for close combat, but with an element of cover to help protect against sniping and dare I say it... camping. Perhaps cover could be provided by having an empty ship in the middle of the killbox with a few port holes and entrances.

Ooooooh, I could go on and on. Go for it Keeper and good luck!

There are some excellent ship props in the sdk, this could be a really cool map.

If you wanna start mapping you can find a lot of useful tutorials at these sites

These are the sites I use, if anyone knows of better ones postem'! Very Happy

Mapping is fun b/c you can make anything you ever wanted. But it is difficult... I would suggest starting off with a cube map. Ones like we have in TSGK servers. The shipyard would be cool so many props are already there for use. GO FOR IT! Razz
