Thought I'd just post this for any remaining XP users out here, a great guide for disabling unneeded background services -

http://www.scribd.com/doc/128816/Windows-XP-Services-That-Can-Be-Disabled

If your a bit tech savy you can go Start > Run and type msconfig, then disable some of the crap in the start up section.

For instance I use Itunes which in background services alone can have 3 running when its not open. Shocked

Heres my task manager now -

I usually have 50-60 processes running, pretty much all need to run.

creative xfi drivers and software
logitech mouse and keyboard
antivirus
google desktop
nvidia drivers
router monitor app
taskbar and keyboard tweak tools
and some other things.

uses about 500mb of ram. right now with firefox I´m at 844mb.
thats almost half of my memory filled just with windows and firefox! Confused
need to go over the list again to see if I really need all of them.

For my other old pc I did make a simple .bat file that stops lots of useless processes.

Just open up notepad and type in the processes you want stopped.

E.g. if you have "Ituneshelper.exe" you see in taskmanger.

Type in notepad

Code:
tskill Ituneshelper

Then Save as type "All files"

and save as e.g "speed_up_pc.bat"

This way is safe as all processes will be back on pc start up, but just double click the "speed_up_pc.bat" to stop the processes you don't want.

The point is that they don't start at all, as most of them are useless programs that serve no real purpose.

I'd give it about a week before you drank the pepsi...
