Swopping system HDD |
|
Hi
I have been asked to replace my parents HDD. As the OS came prewritten on the HDD with the computer i was wondering if i used a disc image program such as norton ghost, would it transfer every thing onto a new HDD, including OS, keys, passwords, registry etc
Any feed back on this method or any others greatly appreciated.

Yes, it's supposed to work this way.
This Freeware may be of use for you: http://www.pc-inspector.de/Sites/clone_maxx/info.htm?Language=1

I'm not too sure if you can transfer a windows install from one h.d.d. to another like that. It might be better to copy all of the important stuff off the drive, use http://driverpacks.net/DriverPacks/ to get all of the drivers from it, then reinstall Windows and copy the data back across. I'm sure someone will know though

Yes.
Only issue that may occur is the Windows XP Anti-Copy Protection when you will boot on the new HDD, it is so random, don't know if it will take care of only 1 hard drive change, maybe it is not a problem, will see.

Install Acronis True Image on your Hdd(old)..and make a backup of your system partition, then copy the .tib file on another partition such as external hdd. Mount y new hdd as primary then restore the tib file.
To make this is also possible create an Acronis Boot Disk this is the best method instead the classic windows re-installation.

Is there Original HDD faulty or do they just want extra space/ a new HDD?
I've never done a copy of data on HDD's before, I always just format and start from new.

y must make a backup first(with acronis program) This is not a very backup, but a specular image of your partition.
Install & open Acronis true image
Click on Make backup and then select the partition to copy.(Es. C:\)
Now select the directory in which the files(.Tib) will be stored.
Wait some minutes(much files = much time).
At the end of the copy process y will find, in the same directory, the tib files.
..

Hi Borg,
you did not mention what is the make and model of the computer.
There might just be somebody out there who has a copy of a system restore disk. This would make like very simple.
I have restore disks for most Compaq and HP systems some Dell and machines and also Toshiba laptops if that is any help.
