Warhammer Subject description: Help |
|
So the missus might go for a job with a company that helps develop warhammer. The missus likes reading, walking, dining out and theatre. The missus know a lot about IT things but wouldn't know an MMORPG if it came up and bit her on the ass so.
Any warhammer fans?
What is it?
Is it any good?
Is there a particular feature of it that's fairly unique?
How big is the community
How does it operate (e,g, hl2dm community = Steam, Forums, Friends network etc)?
Any big problems / scandal with it?
Basically, what does she need to know to make her sound like she has heard of it!
Thanks
Diet (btw I know nothing about mmorpgs)

hey dude,
well Warhammer is a franchise that is owned by Games Workshop which created the first form of turn based strategy tabletop games stylee.
People go get sets of small models, paint them and create wonderful armies. The meeting place is usually at the Game's Workshop retail place as they have really cool miniature maps for people to game on. The sets are quite expensive and painting them takes ages. As for gaming table top style, you don't have a computer telling you that you are not allowed to go here or there. Every set piece has a ruler and the randomness element (attack points and the probability of it hitting) are calculated by the throw of various dice.
The actual company has many franchises, and numerous games were published, this is a gold mine for game developers as the company was started in 1975, so you have over 33 years of content to draw from.
The main active franchises within Games workshop are:
Warhammer fantasy universe, which is classic sword and magic fantasy
Warhammer 40,000, which is futuristic battlegalactica style fantasy
and most notably Dawn of War is a strategy game developed by THQ using the Warhammer 40,000 universe and enjoys a huge following amongst the RTS gaming circles.
and lastly The Lord of the rings battle sets.
if it's good or not, well it's really good, it's such a huge universe, with nice stories, they publish monthly magazines keeping you update with the worlds they created, the monsters and the stories.
in the case of Warhammer Online, it's based on the fantasy world, swords and magic which set it in a classic MMOrpg theme, but the twist is that you get to live and become one of the characters most Games workshop fans created and drew. The stories they could draw from are huge so the world they'd create will be so intricate and detailed. Each MMO comes with guild (clan) tools and the usual player versus environment quests. With MMOs the best thing is that you meet alot of people good and bad, and once it's good it's crazy the stuff that goes down when you adventure with a good party (party is a group set to adventure together). In this game, you get realm vs realm battles as in you have a huge world and two big factions, each faction battles it out, if a faction wins, you get extra added features added to you towns and battle bonuses,if your realm is defeated you don't get any of the extra features. The lore in the game is enough to keep you going.
The community services is usually built into the game, from games like guildwars which ghost and I play you can chat to the local area or your party or your guild all at the sametime, so everyone keeps intouch with everyone and there is a huge sense of comradeship as you help out people finish a particular quest or aquire certain rare items to sell on.
For instance some guilds could be 500+ people and you'd never run out of people to play with 247. Most MMOs have fan websites and big guilds have forums to communicate, swap items and just plan battles and what not.
the only problem usually stems from the asian side of things, they usually farm items for money, and if you don't have games that spawn your own map for you, it gets kinda lame as they sit there and get all the good items, to the point where,in final fantasy online, we got all the people on the server to create a huge man to man chain to block all the asian farmers and we stopped the game for 3 days till all the asian farmers accounts were revoked as it was ridiculous, they farm for gold then you go to shady websites and people pay real money for in game gold. Most games are designed to tackle that by having items that can't be sold on, or items that are useful and powerful only when used by your characters only.
the game is still in beta and is set to be released later on this month, it is really exciting as anyone wanting to play an MMO has the chance to get in when everyone in game is a noob. Many guilds transfer from other games so you get a preset guild playing a new game, which is cool too.
that's me two cents about the whole game, hope you find it useful.

Drop into the games workshop shop on liffey street mate. They will be more than happy to tell you anything you want to know about Warhammer. It may be a problem to shut them up though..
