It's supposed to be 10Mbps down / 1 Mbps up but I never even see close to those speeds. Enjoy your new connection. BTW what did you have previously?

Hi Dumbazz,
My new modem (5 meg) can usually pull about 4 megs average,I've used many speedtests to be sure.My favorite is,
http://speedtest.net/
Try that and see what you get.

I have 3mbit down / 0.5mbit up. I get the speed thats promised. too bad I can´t get more at my area because my house is too far from the connection point. maximum available is 18mbit down / 0.8mbit up.

What I can't understand is why they offer say 5 down and .5 up but wont offer 2.5 up and down.

One large part is that they want to isolate "business" customers, who are operating websites, and charge them more. Also, I think most ISP's set up their equipment to have much more bandwidth on the down side, since that's what most people want.

Good explanation - ty.
Here's mine, the first is with Irish Broadband. It's meant to be 3 up 3 down. It's a business a/c and is my preferred ISP when playing cos when it's good it's very good. However, it's erratic (point to point) so I got in ntl on cable. This is shite, meant to be 6 down .6 up (which the speedtest shows. However it's normally crap. I'm thinking of switching over to Raffa's provider. If I ever sell this house the buyer will think I ran a datacentre with all the ISP cabling.

How do you acheive such results!!!!
Very nice.
I'm still waiting to get a 20 mbs booster but my isp requires me to pay a certain amount of bills (now that it's in my name) before they let me get it.

Well my internet is generally ok. It used to be terrible during the day with high ping of 200+ on any server but I think Virgin Media/NTL have finally acknowledged there was a problem and increased the bandwidth. It still sometimes goes bad around 9pm though.

It is quite complex.
But rapidly, it is related about the distance from you and the first point of connectivity (DSLAM for DSL).
Downstream comes from the DSLAM to the client, the DSLAM hardware is very powerfull and then the bandwidth can be more important than client to DSLAM (upstream).
This is about the Wavelength, DSLAM can spread a wavelength with a strong intensity at a high frequency (rates), the wavelength lost intensity and the frequency down with the distance, if you live at 1 mile from a DSLAM you will have a better downstream than someone who live at 3 miles (maybe 2x more than this person).
Now, the upstream is managed by your home hardware a lot less powerfull than the DSLAM hardware, you are limited by this hardware and your signal home to DSLAM is less intense and the wavelength frequency is affected. With ADSL2+ the newest DSL technologie upstream can be up to 1mb/s, also the upstream rate can be affect by your distance from the DSLAM.
Fiber optics aren't concerned and Upstream (and mostly downstream too) is intentionaly limited by the provider for the reason that Sidi mentionned about hosting activity at home.
Some technologie like SDLS offert the same amount of up and down but a lot slower than DSL and a lot more expensive.
The DSL technologie will soon be slowly replaced by FTTH (Fiber to home).
FTTH is widely deployed in largest japanese cities like Tokyo, the europe is following, you will soon enjoy a symetric up and down at 50mb/s, 100mb/s, 2.5Gb/s...
