I recommend AVG, however due to Grisofts big update, its not something i want running on machines all the time. Just like Norton.

Best thing to do, is to install avg, update, scan, then remove it.

Stick to spybot search and destroy to keep your pc clean from spyware and trojens.

Alternativly Panda's online scan is a better alternative as there is no install Smile Panda's scan identifys 200% of virus's than nortan picks up LRazz

Would have recommended exactly the same softs. Additionally, use Firefox & Thunderbird and use a Router/Firewall.

I'd suggest Avira AntiVir Personal. Very slim Program that protects my PC since ages and it's free.

been using it for a year now, cannot recommend it enough.

Same here. I certainly prefer it to Norton (my previous security software). It's much slimmer that's for sure. Also, it's Russian and they know a bit about internet protection. Ask any Estonian (wink, wink)

I tried Kaspersky when it came free with my new motherboard ...it works fine but slowed my PC down Crying or Very sad

Norton is the worst peace of crap that I have ever had on my PC Mad

I use NOD32 it works great with no effect on my PC. Very Happy

Best Virus Software out there, my dad uses it at work for 50 + Computers and I also use it at home on my personal computer. No stupid popups every 2 minutes, just does the job in the backgroumd, regular updates.

Ive used Mcafee and Norton in the past and this craps over the both of them combined.

Sincerely

Good for me anyway. Smile

I agree, one of the best free ones. unfortunately I had problems with it, it would just not start sometimes so I gave it up.

Kaspersky is a pretty good one, it's hard to know the best one though because there's constant updates and different ones always take the lead.

Most anti virus software and pop up blockers work great at stopping things getting on your PC. Smile
If your PC is infected before you install them you are stuffed . Sad and I would reinstall and load anti virus software before you go online .

I also like NOD32 it only uses 30mb of ram lots of updates that are not big in file size, and my pc starts up in 2 sec's without Norton Very Happy before with Norton about 5 mins or more. Mad

Internet Security 101

1. Download Firefox, internet explorer has more holes than Swiss Cheese.
2. Install a decent anti virus e.g. AVG, Avira, Nod32, Kaspersky, Avast, for the love of God don't install Norton.
3. Download and install the "stealther" addon for Firefox. Use it whenever you are concerned about security.
4. Download and install a reputable Anti Spyware suite e.g. Spybot S&D, Ad-Aware.
5. Be careful about what programs you download using peer to peer networks.

Or the really short version.

1. Install a linux distribtuion
2. Never have to worry about viruses or spyware again.

I do not think...
DirectX it's reserved to Windows... you can emulate Win on Linux but it
should be illegal...

Wine is not illegal. Yes it is possible to run dm under in Linux, but in my experience it is not comparable to Windows. The last time I tried I could only run the game in DX7 and it was very buggy, it may have been because of weird drivers though. I have yet to try with my Nvidia card, which has much better drivers in linux.

You could try using the live cd Lawlitz. Fedora, Ubuntu, PCLInuxOS and most major distributions allow you to use the distro without installing it. PM if you want any help setting it up Smile. This page should expain the performance of Half-Life 2 using Wine, http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=2890

I'll edit back when I've tried with my new card.

so you use a dual boot or 2 pcs I guess. thought you were playing under linux. I´m not interested if I have to constantly change OS.

I use Ubuntu on my laptop and Dual boot on my pc. The only reason Windows is still on my pc is because of the lack of commercial gaming in Linux.

All that aside, I can't advise you to set up a dual boot just to see how dm plays under Ubuntu. Test it out with the live cd first, or research it on the net. The results seem to vary wildly from pc to pc. Some people have reported Half-Life 2 playing better under Wine than in Vista, while others can't even get it to run.

The comments about the internet security still stand though, if you can mange to obtain a virus in the wild using a Linux distro, you have some sort of gift Wink
