Help with Travel Plans! Subject description: Australia |
|
Hello everyone!
I was wondering if some of you might be able to help me out a bit.
Have any of you ever been to Australia?
I'm currently planning a few months of Work and Travel, and I was wondering where to go: Sydney or Melbourne? I don't know if I'll be able to visit both cities. Darwin would be a good opportunity for jobs, but it's way too hot for me there
If any of you have experiences with that sort of trip, or just been to those cities, I'd appreciate it if you could tell me a bit about it, any tips are welcome
(though I think I might go to Melbourne, I thought I'd ask first, maybe there is someone who wants to convince me of going to Sidney instead the only reason I want to go to Melbourne is because Slipknot will be playing there in October )

If you go in Australia, I will be very jealous. Really.
I've never been there, unfortunately, but I'd suggest you to go in Sydney. The place arround the opera must be so great.
If you go there you will be forced to bring pictures, lots of pictures!
Edit: Ah, I see that I wouldn't be the only one so jealous!

I've afew friends friends from australia and who have gone to live in Australia. I'm certain they would say Sidney.
They would also recommend you hit the road for a few weeks and take the coast road. Enjoy.

2) no Sir, no soggy cornflakes do they have lactose-free milk in Australia? If not.. omg

yes, you do I've had it for a few months now, it still kills me.. I'm a chocolate addicted!!!
I hope it will be a good time.. I know there will be times when I just want to go home, quit that whole adventure - but that's where I want to prove my will to go through with something I want, even if it's really really really hard. Yeah, it'll be a real adventure for me, all alone on the other side of the earth (from my view! XD)

I would recommend Brisbane far ahead for its quality of life as you gonna stay there for a while.

Well, all the organizations I could be going with usually only offer to start in either Sydney, Melbourne or Darwin, so it has to be one of those. But since it's called Work & Travel, who knows where I'll end up eventually
Edit: I just checked a map and I think it would work out perfectly to be travelling along the east coast, to Brisbane, then later from there MAYBE to Darwin to earn some good money (and get burned a lot -.-'), so I have enough for my visit to New Zealand and the USA haha I'm getting excited now, really excited

Also visit Tasmania if you have the opportunity easy to reach, and, an extremly wonderfull place is the Norfolk Island located at the north of New Zealand, but reaching the Norfolk Island is not easy and requires a bit of organisation which is the reason it is a Pacific ocean's jewel.
Enjoy your trip, Australia is a very relaxing place and very rich in biodiversity.

cow milk is bad for you anyway. I gave up drinking it a few months ago. I drink rice milk for the cornflakes instead which tastes better too. (naturally sweet). too bad its hard to avoid it as an ingredient for other things. I just can´t give up eating cheesecakes.
for the trip, I´d like to do that too but I dont think my parents would agree with me being away so long . but I want to go to the usa sometime for maybe 2 weeks. I´ll be going to england for a week soon with my english class though.

Now, Zog has actually been there and Zogette has been there about 7 times.
So as you asked for advice with travel plans ~
Here is my two cents worth.
Book your flights as far in advance as possible. Substantaial savings up to 50% can be made by doing this. If it all goes pear shaped all you lose is your deposit. The full fare is not normally due until a month before departure.
Try to use an airline that is principally owned or partly owned by British Airways. Slightly more expensive but if you get stranded somewhere, you can get a seat on the likes of Quantas or Air New Zealand. Failing this chose a reputable airline. ( Zogette only uses B.A. now)
Take out travel insurance - if you are away for over 30 days the normal terms do not apply for the return flight months ahead.
Watch the exchange rates in the meantime. The Aussie buck is not the strongest of currency so, if you have savings speculate.
As for the country ~
remember you have to pay for health care. Take out insurance unless you are being sponsored or staying with family. If that is the case you can register for medicare ( I think that is what it is called ) and that is a whole load cheaper.
Sydney is a busy cosmopolitan metropolis. I has a lot going for it if you like the fast life. It has its down sides principally crime and more so getting out of the place. It takes about 4 hours to go from north to south.
However plenty going on all the time as would be in a big city. ( ps, the Shielas outnumber the Bruces so if you were a boloke you would have a whale of a time.)
Never got out of NSW when I was there so I can't comment on on Melbourne. Zogette (aka psycho bitch from hell ) says Tasmania is ace and has a temperate climate. Not to hot and never cold 10 - 30 centigrade.
Oh, sun block is expensive and you are going to need lots.
Zog

I advice you to visit the other big citys "near" Los Angeles like San Francisco. I found that Los Angeles was only nice when you are near the ocean, the beach, in one word the coast.

I know, I would prefer San Francisco to Los Angeles, I always wanted to see it.. but I will definitely fly to Los Angeles, there's no other way (if I travel with an organization and don't plan EVERYTHING myself). It depends on how long I stay there and how much money I have left, if I can see other cities or not. But yeah, San Francisco <3 I would definitely love to see that city

Thanks to all again.
I'm leaving Germany October 27, headed to Sydney with Quantas Airline, where I'll arrive October 29 (Stopover will be Singapore).
Zog, in terms of health care, I think you probably meant Caremed?
I don't have exact plans as to where I'm going to go, what I'm going to see, yet - I'll try to travel as far as I'll be able to. I'll stay in Australia for about half a year, then spend another 2 weeks in New Zealand, and two weeks in the US.
I can't name an exact date for my return, but it should be around end of may/beginning of june.
I'll stay active in the forum of course, and who knows, maybe from time to time I'll be able to join a game or two
Depending on the computers and internet connections I'll be using, I might not be able to connect to Steam Community, so if people want to stay in contact with me, they'd have to add me in either MSN or ICQ. PM me if you want to, then I give my adress
I'm starting to feel adventurous!! and nervous
Hugs to all (and Huggies for Shimmy)
Illy
