ok guys...
so let's say when someone sez OMG OMG OMG This graphic card as an example an nvidia 8800GT owns an ati 3870 right? how does that mean that the nivdia is better?

I mean if the nvidia's own graphic card is an ati, wouldnt that make the ati the better card... because the Nvidia games using an ati...

people can be so stupid sometimes! pshhhh

both cards are a perfect balence

8800G is better in perfomance, but the H3870 is less expensive

and there is going to be price cuts so its gonna cost around 170€ YEAHHHH

Going to be? You can get them for 167, and that's a pre-overclocked MSI. Prices are dropping heavily since the launch of the 9600 GT

It does not take a seriously good graphics to play dm or for that matter a state of the art rig. It's like spending mega bucks on a hi fi for the reproduction that the human ear can not hear. Check out the recommended specs.
In fact, I took a a rig out of a dumpster not so long ago that had a higher spec with the exception of the on board graphics. Obviously, a system that is not under strain is less susceptible to the CRASH.
I started off with a Gforce 4 and progressed to an Ati which had a very short and lack luster life. I had to go back to the old card and noticed no difference save the number of crashes.
I could go back to my old rig which is a P4 3g with an FX5200 and I doubt if I would notice the difference in the graphic side.
Having said this, it would not be possible if I did not take the Razer mouse and the Reclusa keyboard with me. If anything, these are the two items which got my kpd up and over 1 in normal play.
I suppose at the level some of you play at, a 5% improvement in overall performance might be critical but for Zog it only means a handful of kills or deaths over the course of a nights play.

I have 7600 at the moment and I will not change it until the price of the better cards comes down. I have a 20 inch Acer fp which I got at a bargin price. It has a average response time of 200ms. This = 200 fps. My 19 in Sony CRT monitor's response time is measured in nano seconds. The max the 7600 put out in dm was 349 fps.
So I set fps_max at 200 for my current monitor and that way I know I will never lose a critical frame. (that is if I could see it : check the response time of the human eye)
A normal TV does about 30 fps and it seems pretty smooth. Then again we don't sit 2 foot (600cm.) away from the screen.
Flat panel monitors are brilliant but the do have the response time factor that a CRT monitor is not in real terms, constrained by.
Realistically you need a fp monitor with a 2ms response time = 500 fps if you are that critical or a fps whore.
I think the secret for dm is not the capability of the graphics card but the memory it has onboard, the more the better. Any card which uses system memory is only fit for the crash bin. The same applies for sound cards.

No matter what rig you have or the graphics setup, the game is only as good as your connection OR as good as Steam allows it to be.

I have the same card x1600 512mb, got it cheap brand new, and it has more power than the pro so I'm happier with it it handles most games very well.

Although i'm not too partial either way I'll go with whatever company has my best deal at the time.

Its whatever you are happy with. Esoterically the Ati card has the edge on on the raz but Nvida beats it hands down on stability.
Despite the claims that each company make, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
I have long since stopped believing what the card makers, Nvidia and Ati say. Rolling Eyes
On balance I go for Nvidia.
A couple of expensive and bad experiences with Ati might be clouding my judgement but at the end of the day, I have had 2 Ati's fry on me. Mad
The last offering for the games market from Ati was a disaster and the budget end cards are worse than some on board graphics setups.
I have an old Kyro 2 64k card which only runs up to DX8 ------------- pwand but if they could have got a foothold, it might be a 3 way hypothetical discussion.

My old rig didn't even have PCI express yet it played HL2DM fine, Graphix cards are too overated, if you wanna spend an extra $200 on a better gfx card to get a few extra FPS and a slightly better looking orb ball then go ahead, your the sucker Razz
