Subject description: thursday 22/11/2007

hi there to all my friends at TSGK and those I do not know as well
Over the last month or two, I have been making a completely new map from scratch.
This map will be called dm_killbox_[tsf]_the_octagons. This is primarily a killbox map but it has 2 octagon shaped boxes that are linked together by a short tunnel on the ground level and two walkways about two thirds of the way up. there is a central room that overlooks both boxes with three possible ways to get up into that room.
These are by way of two teleports, one in each of the octagon boxes an a neat little ladder system leading up from the small tunnel on the ground floor . Also at the top of the ladders there is a very small room with a sliding door which is triggered by a player coming up the ladder.
This sliding door is a one way door so you can get into the central room via it but not back out after it has closed.
There are two possible ways out of this central room. either jump out of the windows into one of the boxes or to shoot a sign on the wall and exit using a teleport that is inside the tardis. (police box)

There are many other little things to get your interest in this map such as two gold dalek statues , small tardises to use as physics and even a couple of daleks to throw as well
I will be putting it on the [ TSF ] server (( ip 217.163.27.50:27015)) on thursday afternoon and leaving on for the night at least.

You can view the pictures and coment on this map here

Always best to have a evening kick off so you get a good lot of players at once for your map test/rollout. Maybe 8pm Exclamation

Hope to be there LD

First, install your texture (the VTF) texturename.vtf inside an easy folder.
Like "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\accountname\half-life 2 deathmatch\hl2mp\materials\mapname" for exemple (recommended).

Create the VMT file texturename.vmt inside the same folder and insert:

Code:
"lightmappedgeneric" {

"$basetexture" "mapname/texturename"
}

You can add more parameter to the VMT file if you want.
Use that texture as it inside your map with the same path before the addition with pakrat.

Run pakrat, open the BSP, clic Add, browse to the texture folder, select all the file VMT et VTF and clic Open, it will ask you "Fix-up path to: ..."
Reply Yes to All.
Save.

Your done.
Run buildcubemap after pakrat.

Having worked on why pakrat sometimes ignores textures, i've found that whilst hammer is happy with the /'s to be \'a (i.e.
Quote:
"$basetexture" "mapname\texturename"

pakrat really struggles with them.

I used a program called editplus2 (www.editplus.com) which searched all the VMT files, allows you to open them all and then globally find/replace the correct / in and save them out globally.

Pakrat wont, yet hammer will also omit:
Quote:
"$basetexture" "mapname//texturename"

(how people got textures with that in i'll never know Mad

And if all else fails, pakrat can sometimes be fussy with:
Quote:
"$basetexture" "/mapname/texturename"

Theres my2pence worth if it helps :0
Cheers, Rav

Yes, be sure that your VMT file is correctly formated especialy the texture path information, if not decals or custom textures will not show up.

Using the lastest pakrat version too is a good idea which is the v0.95.

Also you can find more information concerning the use of VMT if needed to add more properties to it:

What is exactly the problem with pakrat?
You select your textures and you clic ok, that is all it does.
If you provide uncorrect VMT files, what ever MAN or Pakrat your textures will never show up.

Also, all the customs texures must be inside /materials/ , if not, not showing up either, that is Valve standard, pakrat doesn't have anything to do, it is just an archiver like Winzip or Winrar, it takes multiple files and include them inside one.

Except that it needs Java which require a BAT file to run the command line and start the programm, but if i remember this BAT file is already included with the package.

Thanks for thr responces guys hope to see many of you all there tonight Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Thanks osiris for the guidelines on pack rat but kc|rav and i have spent hrs trying to sort it out without any luck.
The actual problem we have is that it adds all our home made textures with out any trouble Very Happy . But when it comes to the cncro4s and the cncro4sp2 textures which if memory server me right is over 4000 textures, it will add the VTF with no problem but when it comes to the vmt, (the one with the actual picture in it) pack rat adds it the file size of the map goes up but in game no textures. so come out of game use pack rat to re add them it says that the picture files are not there and it wants to add them so do it again and again the file size goes up and again it doesent work in game.

but now i used man it worked first time YAAYYYYYY Very Happy

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Thanks for the responce guys this map is now in our map cycle and our map cycle is only 8 maps now so it comes around quite quickly. Feel free to drop in any time.... Cool .

PS.
I am now working on a killbox map and will let you all know when this one is ready to test.
This time as we all love tsgk v8 so much I wanted to create a map that had the same fast game play as v8 but was not just another copy of a great map. It is only in its early stages and is still a way off completion. As I am sure those of you who use hammer will know mapping takes a lot of time to get right, And the octagons map took me at least 2 months, and I am sure that this one will take nearly as long. Laughing Laughing

Cool, killboxs are fun Cool
yeah making maps in hammer does take sometime if the map has alot of brush work, or a big map, also hard shapes made by the cuting tool takes time. Surprised
