Advanced Movement Basics. Subject description: Flying in Half Life 2. |
|
One style of movement I use is something called "Shift Jumping" It's basically the same thing as "Bunny Hopping" but unfortunately you can't bunny hop in Half Life 2. You can in Half Life 2 Deathmatch Pro, but I don't know how many of you have played that. Basically what Shift Jumping is...
Holding Shift and using a + w, while moving your mouse in that direction, like moving the mouse towards Northwest, if the top of your screen in North. The opposite applies to d + w, you have to have your mouse towards Northeast, It can also be done with s + a, and s + d, but you have to move the mouse in the opposite direction that you're jumping...
like if your jumping backwards with a + s holding shift, you want to be facing towards northeast. this is difficult shift jumping, but it's something that's do-able.
The nice thing about shift jumping is that if a gernade goes off by you, you'll go flying at a good speed, since half life 2's air acceleration is actually faster than running at some points, like when you get hit by a gernade.
It's also extremely useful in getting to health packs and weapons. The quicker you move, the easier it is to pick things up. If anyone is interested, or doesn't understand shift jumping, I'll be more than happy to make a video explaining it.

you've never heard of bunny hopping? it's really useful in games like quake, but it's called "strafe jumping" in quake, i just call it shift jumping because the shift boosts your speed, and in the air you can accelerate more than just running. I actually don't know how to record me playing, but if i found out how to, i'd show you guys what i'm talking about.

The Gunslinger is on a par with the PiC (Pain is coming) guys, so probably.
to open the demo files, copy them to the same folder as your HLDM.exe file I think it is something like - C:\...\valve\<yoursteamname>\HLDeathMatch
Now launch the game, (do not join a map) just open the console and try playdemo "demo1"
Note Demo1 should be replaced with whatever the file is called
Good luck

Steam forum is shit, sincerely.
So if you can post your own demo there it's good.
And no we will not do a clan fight against a clan that we don't know at all, and as i know they don't like killbox maps because it's for noobs, blablabla... Final point about that.

Agreed Steam forum = doo doo
and yeah, PiC would probably not play any kill box variants.
I could not do a demo for you, since I am still to master these advanced techniques myself

... Absolutly not, they probably don't even know TSGK, i just say that some clans like to play official maps and some like to play killbox, that's it.
Please, put an end to this subject, this topic is going out of its original subject, or open a new topic.

Half Life 2 Deathmatch Pro |
|
http://www.hl2dmpro.com/features.html
check out the difference between half life 2 deathmatch, and half life 2 deathmatch pro...you can bunnyhop, the get rid of some of the slam exploits, and you can just do different stuff.
This is the game with easy to do ridiculous movements, with shift jumping, it's kind of faking what you can do in deathmatch pro.

Best way to start is to strafe jump. If you crouch jump using a starfe key (not forwards/backwards) and boost (+ flick mouse in direction your going) you travel faster and further.
If you enable cl_showpos 1 in your console you will see the velocity you trvael at. Max using normal boost and jump is about 360, using strafe jumping you hit speeds well over 500.
Bunny Hopping is kinda just doing it over and over again. If you can jump from the charger room in Lockdown to the opposite balcony (or vice versa) then you can strafe jump!
If you add in 'speed skating' you can travel round maps at serious speed (you lose less boost using speed skating). Speed skating is basically boost crouch jump, release boost when in air (keep holding crouch) then hit jump several times just as you land. Then repeat when you lose speed.
I can (just!) about do both but not effectively in game and I can't be bothered to learn properly but players who do tend to be very hard to hit.

Thanks wonderbanana
I can't get this to work at all.
I'm stationery. I press crouch (and I crouch). I hold shift (sprint) as well.. then I press say 'a' for strafing left (while holding crouch and sprint). And then I flich the mouse a bit to the left. I still get nowhere.
I tend to simple sprint, jump + flick and release sprint. It gets my speed up to over 400 (but never 500).
Where am I going wrong. Is the crouch important in this respect? (I know it's important for reducing hit target and getting in through windows, over objects etc)
Thanks
Diet

The way I do it (and a fellow clan member who does it all the time) is: strafe, boost, jump, crouch, flick.
The way Gunslinger recommends is (I can't personally do it this way):
Quote: |
This example will use a right-turning strafe jump.
1) Face slightly left of where you want to go (about 10 degrees of turn is all you really need.)
2) Hit forward and sprint
3) Hit right strafe
4) Move the mouse sharply to the right to initiate your turn.
5) As you begin to face the direction you want to go, hit jump
6) Greatly slow your mouse movement
7) Release sprint |
I was always told never to hit forwards but there you go! I'm no expert though, I can only do the Lockdown jump now and then (a good benchmark) and its a really hard technique to learn. I gave up as I enjoy the game anyway but if you can learn it efficiently its a huge advantage. I'll have a word with JC since he does it like a rabbit on steroids

lol
I remember now how I learned 'my' way... from the same Gunslinger post. I'll try it you way and see what difference it makes.
Please do ask Mr Denton for me. He does hop around like a bunny, a very lethal bunny wabbit.

I use gunslinger's method as well, although I don't use the strafe jump in battle extensively. One thing I've started doing is practicing the motion until the jump (steps 1 to 4 of gunslinger's method) to get the start 'optimized' (for lack of a better term). If I can figure out how to consistently get a velocity of over 400 after my flick (happens sometimes) I know the jump will be awesome even if my timing on the jump sucks. I can get a velocity of about 430 on 400 gravity on a single jump without crouching. On multiple jumps I'm not quite sure how fast I get, but if I hit a box and break it, I'm doing something right . Now I just need consistency.
For Diet...in my short jumping practice session this evening crouching appeared to get me a boost of around 50 velocity (to about 480, maybe higher) on a single jump (assuming that both jumps were the same, which they probably weren't). Anyway, seems like a nice increase to me .
Wonderbanana, thanks for the tip on speed skating. I'll probably never use it in game, but it has a real cool feel to it.

Another very minor tip is wall hugging. Although, not very useful, it might give a slight edge if you run out of sprint. Essentially walk up to a wall, turn 45 degrees right or left and walk forward maintaining that angle. It increases the normal walk speed by about 20/30. Or else you can turn around an fight like a man!

No probs matey I quite like using it when I'm exploring a map on me tod or waiting for other players but again I'm not effective with it in game. Its best used with bhopping to preserve boost.
It's well worth spectating JC if you ever get the chance, he bhops and speed skates and its great to watch, wish I could move like he does!
