I Hate ATI |

I cannot play DM because there is a weird problem, no matter how low or high I adjust the settings, where every 3 or 4 seconds, everything freezes. This is frustrating to me. I blame this puny little radeon x300. -waiting on a replacement geforce 7600 from leadtek

Have you experienced this problem in other games?

that is really weird as Hl2 is optimized for the ATI graphic cards and runs wonderfully on them.

Something must be conflicting norm because my original graphics processor was an ATI X200,it wasnt the greatest but it still ran the game without severe freezes like that.

My previous card was the 9800XT and never had any problem. Maybe just a bad card, but....

Um, what do you expect? Its an X300, its not really meant for HL2 mate.
Quote: |
The X300 is not targeted towards anyone looking to play Doom 3 or the upcoming Half Life 2, but is targeted towards the price conscious consumer looking for a basic native PCI Express videocard with full DX9 support. With a modestly clocked R300 core set at 325Mhz and a native memory speed set at 400Mhz DDR, this card is not intended for blazing speed in any way shape or form.

norm, that sounds more like your network card sending bad cycles to your processor. Do you use onboard lan?

Hi,
when I posted you a reply in the "serious problem" thread You did not mention it was a X300.
The X300 is a budget price pci express card. In order to cut the cost it uses on board memory and system memory. If it is a 128k card it will use up to 128k of system memory as required. Likewise a 256k will use up to 256k.
Now HL2 does not take a lot of memory to run but about 350k. It was designed to be run on systems with 512k memory which was about the norm when the game was first released.
Your system also requires memory to run and will take as much as it can get.
Programs running in the background also need memory.
If you start to do the sums, you will see that you will be lucky to get the game to run at all on 512k system memory with the 128k X300 card.
With more memory, the headroom is obviously greater but at the end of the day and graphics card that uses system memory is going to suffer in performance when the demands for memory are high.
The Nvidia 7600GS is a good choice and is reasonably priced The 256 k version should do the job perfectly. You should however be thinking in terms of a card with DX10 support.
