Flying |
|
Lately I notice that I tend to fly aroun a lot. It happens during gg melees. All of a sudden I go flying across the map. It's more than the gg jump exploit.
While it's very handy (although I have no control over when it happens) it must look very odd.
Any ideas? I read that high cmd_rates can have such an effect. Mine is set at 100.00000 or something. I don't recall setting this.
The only thing I can think of is that I installed hl2 on a new PC and that maybe this has something to do with it.

Its mostly a phsyics bug i think, i get it all the time. Either if you get hit by something and it doesnt kill you when it should, or just from walking over it etc. Its a great thing to use i some maps, in lockdown for example i jump over all physics i come across in the hope that i clip the edge and fire forward. It handy when it works lol. Cynyx knows a lot about this bug

sometimes the gamefiles become bugged so that it happens a lot more often. I had this once and I was flying around a few times every game. so I reinstalled hl2dm and then it was fixed.

I've seen this happening a lot lately. Folks hitting a phys object and bouncing straight up and me getting speed boosts from physics when I'm not expecting them (I use default rates, btw). Something with the latest update must have screwed with the physics system somewhat.
I'm not going to complain too much though, it's nice to chuck an object through the air and get a speed boost, although I do seem to suicide more by hitting stationary phys objects =(.

Yes! Exactly the same here.
Ah well, it's just another feature/bug of that game I guess.

i am only able to fly via physics maybe 1 out of 15 games and on those games I somehow feel like I have an unfair advantage.
During those games another thing that happens is when I am near a grenade that goes off my health goes to 1 health. Normal games I would have died.
Sometimes I wonder if the "pros" always get 1hp after nades going off near them.
and while we're on this topic. Does anyone else experience the super fast SMG or AR2 primary fire death? like on your side you spawn and then the player may hit you with 2 ar2 bullets and then you're dead and you're LIKE WTF!

Round about 75-80% of my kills are with the grav gun and flying is something that happens to me nearly every time I play. It also happens to objects. I have had it happen in an empty server. I happens a lot in the KC killbox then again, lots of other strange things happen there.
It can be simulated if you have a physbox up against the wall and get your jump and aim correct with the grav gun but most times, the phys box just moves. A sort of horizontal grav gun jump if you like.
I am fairly sure it is something to do with you getting caught up in a trajectory of an object instead of the object.

Lol gtas new box takes this to he extreme. Hes played with the air resistance of physics objects. Try jumping over (not on to) an object and firing with the grav gun. You can fly for miles, much like the old days

After extensive testing I have come to a firm conclusion. Simply walking on an object increases speed dramatically (see velocity in top right corner).
I've also noticed in 9/10 times (or 20 / 22 to be exact) that this warning appears in maps when this arises.

uh diet.. i think that is a map specific error.
the clamping error is a result of the velocity too high which i do not see in your screenshot.

Yeah, i noticed this aswell. You just run or land on some Object, get speeded up and some kind of glitch. On the other side the Objects seem not to be that deadly as usual. I often needed to throw a Desk 3 or 4 times at my Opponent to kill him (hopefully) finally.
Happens relative often since the latest Update-Series. I would guess they slightly changed something at the Engine, something related to the Collision-Rules.
This would explain both cases. The glitch and the high survival rate.
P.S. Diet - The Error Message above isnt related to this problem. As Meek still mentioned its only map specific, about the used grass-texture and its settings.

If you strafe jump onto (top of) virtually any physics object and overbounce you will speed across the map very, very fast.
This is repeatable and can be done virtually every time.

Thanks Meek and Danny re error explanation. I must say, I kind of like this recent glitch - causes some very funny moments.

RAM: 2GB DDR2
GFX: XFX GeForce 8600GT 256MB DDR3
MBOARD: GIGABYTE GA-M55S-S3 AM2
PSU: NOX Urano Series 500W

No, with a full server and explosions etc it can dip as low as 50. Which is more than enough for me. I have all graphics options turned up to full and resolution of 1680x1050. Up to a month ago my old PC was only managing 30 fps max but more often than not it hovered at 15 fps.
Interestingly, since I got the new PC, I haven't experienced a fraction of the lag that I did beofre. The point being, that complaints about lag on servers probably do have more to do with the client's specs rather than the sderver's.

the lower framerate you have the more ping you will get
if the framerate is not constant, the mouse sensitivity isnt either. its a known fact
Diet, whatcha think about my (future) specs?

I'm not great on specs but your rig will easily cope well with anything out now. Depends on the price youre paying. Go for widescreen monitor btw if you can.

when I set fps_max 30 (the lowest possible on sv_cheats 0) my ping drops to 5. whats the meaning of this?
is having a constant fps better? so when I have 70-200fps, should I set fps_max to 70?

Breen,
there is nothing better then reading your Posts on a Sunday Morning while having a fresh Coffee.
DrBreen wrote: |

Your Ping wouldnt even care if you shoot your Graphic Card!
DrBreen wrote: |

Same rubbish. Your FPS arent related to your Mouse Sensitivity in any way - in case you dont use your TFT as Mousepad.
DrBreen wrote: |

Possibly for you but i wouldnt count on the rest of the Planet.
Just forget about "Global Warming" its harmless compared with the increasing "Global Stupidity"... the last one will be our End one Day...
Lawitz, you should get exactly 30 fps at fps_max 30, 40 at fps_max 40 and so on. As long your Graphic Card is capable to show the set framerate constant. If there is a difference between the set and showed frames it must be something wrong.
The whole fps-discussion is slightly overrated. In Addition your Monitor is the limitating Factor. Most just forget about. What does it help if your net_graph shows you 200+ fps but your Monitor cuts them down at 60-75 Hz?
Its nothing false in spending Money into High-End Graphic Adapters but the pure Framerate isnt the main-reason therefor. You invest in higher Resolution and Quality Settings like HDR, FSAA and so on. Its not about getting from 200 to 250 FPS - this Scores are only a Indicator to compare different Cards together and not anymore important ingame as long you just get "enough" FPS. Maximum is 75 in most cases - set by the Monitor.

when I try to set it lower than 30 it says that the minimum allowed with sv_cheats 0 is 30.
do I get any advantage if I have a constant fps instead of a very varying one?

From an earlier Post:

I wondered myself aswell because i doubt fps_max 10 or 15 would give you an advantage but they must have had a reason to make it a cheat. It probably effects other settings aswell or could be used like "Bullettime" Mode like in "Max Payne"? |
Create a temp Server, set cheats to 1, fps_max to 15 and test it yourself. I dont know if you feel an advantage with fixed framerate. You need to figure that out for yourself.
The "argueing" between Breen and me is a "special forum romance". It not your business and Breen knows to take it right.
