PostPosted: Tue Jun 26, 2007 22:16    Post subject:  Low fps

Just recently got myself a 19" widescreen LCD monitor(previous monitor was a 16" CRT)and ever since i pluged it in i have been getting some very poor fps, around 20-30 on some maps and can only assume its something to do with the new monitor.
I have tried the lowest video settings in game and it makes no difference to the performance what so ever, which seems strange,it makes playing very unpleasant. Before when i was playing on the CRT i was getting over 100 fps on most maps and im sure i have a fairly decent system to run this game very well.

Specs:
AMD 3400+ 2.4ghz
2gig ram
7900GTO 512mb

Hope someone can help me out this is driving me nuts.

you usually choose a higher resolution if you have a bigger monitor. Thats what makes your fps go down.

What resolution you using, what's the natural resolution for your monitor, digital connection from your graphics card?

Natural resolution is 1440x900(i think) but it makes no difference to fps when its set to the lowest res.
My card has 2 digital outputs,im guessing for running 2 monitors at the same time, but i'm running it as an analog signal to my monitor,i tried the digital to digital but strangely the quality seems quite poor unless i need to adjust something.

Check your VSync settings inside game options (turn it off if activated - off should be faster), set your game resolution as near to the native monitor resolution as possible and get the latest drivers directly from nvidia site.

The "Digital Signal looks worse" part sounds wired because it should look & work better together and completely saves the work for transforming the signal digital/analog/digital only for transport.

1440*900 is quite alot but a GF7900GTO 512 should be capable for more then ~30 FPS anyway.

What was your earlier resolution while using the 16" CRT and what new Monitor exactly (manufacturer/model) you got?

Heres the monitor i have now:
http://www.it247.com/Product/26-L194WT?campaign=google
Seems to make no difference to my fps whatever resolution or vid settings i use.
With my old CRT i was using 1024x768 res even with my old vid card a 7300GS i was running the game on max settings and was usually getting at least 70-80 fps.I cant believe that a 19" monitor would kill my performance so bad. Sad

It shouldn't. Can you get high FPS with old card and new monitor?

The new card may not be delivering enough FPS due to a problem with the resolution settings not proportionately matching the monitors natural resolution. Like you can have 800x600, 1078 x768 etc. The widescreen aspect may affect it also.

But it's more likely something to do with the card and the ingame settings. Did you try the new card with the old monitor? (if it's still low FPS you know something's up with the card).

As Danny points out, the digital connection should be the same if not better. The fact that you perceive it as worse suggests something funny about the card.

I feel your pain my brother. How come I don't see you online much anymore?

Now just exactly how much system ram do yo have and how much is on the 7300 cs?
If I remember correctly, the 7300 uses system memory to augment the on board memory. If it is a 128K it will use 128k system memory. Likewise a 256k will try to use 256k system memory. If you a short on sytem memory the overall performance of the whole machine will go downhill.
This is a compromise you have to live with in todays budget end video cards.
If you come back and say you have 1mb ram and the card is a 512k, I will have a dig around an see what I can come up with. It is not the monitor unless it is faulty.

I'm sure its not my resolution settings as i have tried just about every setting.

I was running my 7900 on my old monitor for a while and it was running a treat much better than my old 7300.

OK i tried the digital to digital method again and it seems ok now,i guess i must of had the resolution quite low when i first tried it,silly me. Embarassed

I've not been playing much lately, just not enjoying it at the moment but hopefully that will change soon,if i get this problem sorted.

I did suspect it was my vid card so i done a benchmark test on it and it seemed to be a bit lower than what other people are reporting on a stock 7900GTO,maybe 15-20% lower.
So i overclocked it and tried it in game and seems to be a little better but the fps rates seem to drop quite a bit when there are a few players in a server.

I wudn't of thought the montior would effect your FPS unless you changed the resolution, monitor just outputs the graphixs, has nothing to do with your gfx perofrmance, have you tried hooking your old monitor back up to see if it makes any difference? Valve have applied a couple of updates recenty maybe its them?

that's hard to play
that's the reason why i want to ask you if 6800XT if better than 7500 LE?
