PostPosted: Sat Apr 21, 2007 16:56    Post subject:  Ghostdog is stumped

I put together my brothers computer and it's not bad,it'll play his HL2DM for sure.

I have a strange problem with the ethernet (SiS 900 Based fast ethernet adapter) it shows up in the device manager and says it's working properly but when I connect my cable modem to the computer it recognizes the network cable being plugged in but I cant get on the web!

Internet explorer does nothing, windows update does nothing and all other online applications won't respond.

I removed the original Windows XP and installed my spare XP home edition but it still doesn't work online and I cant register the new copy of windows,I tried all of the connection wizards and checked network connections and everything seems to be in place.I don't know what to do because my modems have always been plug and play with windows XP.

I haven't slept yet and won't give up on it.But it's got me stumped and I don't know what to do.

HELP Confused

I had a problem similar to this back in the day with a Leadtek Socket A motherboard (with an nvidia network adapter). Turned out there was a mac ID that I had to specify in the bios before it would work. I'm not sure if that's at play in your instance, but double check the motherboard documentation and see if it says anything along those lines. I haven't had to do that for any other motherboard I've used, though.

Also, if you have a router, make sure it's not somehow blocking his access to the internet. You could try connecting his computer directly to the modem to test this (assuming that your modem and router are separate).

Well the computer has always been directly connected to the modem,I was wondering if I needed to program the address like you said because the computer was put together piece by piece and everything says it's fine.

I can't locate any manuals for this MOBO but it's not that old,I'm on the second day of waiting for a reply from the manufacturer and I have no support.

I'll look into this further.

P.S.sorry Breen that didn't work, but did fix my registration problem and that will make all of this easier.

You'll have the best luck if you put a router between the PC and the modem.

I know that it's obvious, but you do have the connection enabled don't you? Like start, connect to, show all connections. Just in case!

I'm not sure what you mean Diet,

Are you refering to network connections?
I have enabled the connection under network connections but is there another connection program?

Ghostdog,

try to get & install an additional Ethernet Adapter to stay sure the old one isnt destroyed. Happend to me with my "Mainboard included Adapter" some time ago without that Windows Hardware Manager would have noticed anything.

Everything is showed as "Ready to use" but its not in every case right. You cant trust the Hardware Manager - your Ethernet Adapter may be still death.

Good thinking,
I've also discussed this with an IT expert in the UK who usually helps me out,he also wonders if the on-board ethernet is bad,it's a brand new motherboard but can't be returned (E-bay). I read the manual like Plas suggested and there's no mention of configuring the mac address or anything else in the BIOS.

I'm going to purchase another and see what happens because another ethernet adapter is no waste for me.

Kinda forgot to follow up on this post,
Ghostdog is still stumped but the computer is working.

My brother is online with sound and has his copy of HL2DM,
His name is "Cornfederate" because I call him cornfed since he ate my entire birthday cake once Laughing

Welcome him back to the TSGK servers,it's been a while for him and he has ditched the smg and rpg (his choice)

Soon I shall make a grand crate hobo of him and the wackyness shall persist.
