PostPosted: Wed Feb 21, 2007 19:45    Post subject:  Recording Demos and screen capture.

I've found that if i use the record "name" command, that my gameplay seems a little bogged down. To answer this i downloaded a free screen capture utility that some of you may know as FRAPS. http://fraps.com
This bogged my system even more considerably.
Any tips?

In both case your CPU charge, RAM and HDD access will be heavy.
Nothing to do except getting a better CPU that can handle the game and recording in same time.

I will consider it. Harware prices are dropping like crazy! I just bought a 320 GB HDD SATA2 for $112 usd.

I just thought there may be some other utility that is better..

there is gamecam. gamecam doesnt need as much power as fraps does but the ingame demo recording is still the best choice.

Gamecam is usually worse quality though. I use FRAPS personally, at maxed out settings a 30 second vid though can run into the 100's of megs so you have to be careful

the problem with fraps is that you have to play with low fps. and lowfps=low skill. you can test it by playing normal first, then with fraps. you┤ll notice a big difference. at least for me there is.

Okay, here is my plan:
I have an AMD64, so i'll grab an X2. I will buy fraps so i don't have to keep hitting the screen record button. I will record what I want to record with the console command, then play it back and record it with fraps. Then i will photoshop naked pictures into it, burn it to a DVD and leave copies laying around public functions. You guys may or may not get the naked versions

What I do is record using console (I get no lag doing that) Play the file using console. Then record using ZD Soft Game Recorder (rated better then fraps. Cool

Is it cheaper than fraps? fraps=$37usd if you want to record longer than 30 second intervals.

I point my camcorder at the screen. It looks bad and sounds bad, but the fps is amazing and the cost of cpu is nothing! Very Happy

It could record the video as long as you wish. Not like the other screen recorder, which just let you record one minute or with large watermark on the video.

I record hl2dm ingame using the console then playback and record with "fraps".
Then convert the video with "CyberLink PowerDirector" to "MPEG-2 HD 720p", to lower file size alot and quality is nearly lossless.
This way works best for me and how I like it. Cool

Only problem with fraps is that it eats your hard drive space fast. (but quality very good)
I think about 11mins is just over 20GB for max settings 60fps etc.

11mins 20GB convert to MPEG-2 HD 720p is about 1GB or 1.5GB. Wink

E.G. of quality my way Smile
