server latencys |
|
HI every one, hope you all had a really good xmas and all the best for the new year. I wonder if any one can help me with a little problem. I notice that most of my server latencys are above 1000, some are nearly 2000. And I quite often have to bring in 2 or 3 servers by refreshing them individually, otherwise they go non responding.I do however have 1 or2 servers that are around the 30s. My question is why are they all so high as dungeon freaks are nearly all under 50, and he only lives about 15 miles away from me. SECONDLY will this cause me any probs in playing the game.Oh by the way I am only talking about the TSGK servers as thats all I play on. And THIRD, what can I do to solve the problem. I have recently changed net providers as I was capped with toucan, and I am now with talktalk, but the latencys are the same now as before. I am on 2 meg and have done a BT speed test and get 30 ms ping or latency (if they are the same thing). And am running a purpose built games machine....

What servers are around the 30s? Are they UK based? Does this happen all the time. Do you have a wirless router? Is talktalk cable, adsl, wireless?
Try running a tracert (go to dosprompt and type tracecert www.google.co.uk). This will trace the connections. It might indicate a point where there is a bottleneck. It's strange that your ping was the same with you previous isp - suggests a problem at your end.

I'm no expert but the high latency essentially tells you how long it takes for a package of data to be transferred. The longer it takes then the more lag you'll experience in games.
The broadban capacity doesn't really come into play here. The fact that you can transfer (in theory) 2 meg/s doesn't affect things (as you're probably only trying to transfer 0.5 megs per sec anyway). There are other issues like package loss but no need for that now.
Did you run the tracert? Where was the bottleneck?

Sry - didnt see this. go to start, programs...I think accessories... Anyway you'll eventually come across a DOS prompt (maybe comman prompt - my memory isn't good). Click on it and at the cursor type in tracert www.google.co.uk.

There's likely to be 3 columns of numbers, and a long list of lines. The first line will be from your pc to your router, the next from your router to one of your isp servers, the next probably from that server to another of your isp servers until it gets to the point where you isp connects back to the internet.
At some point (I would guess within the first few lines) the numbers might be high. If its the first line it might suggest a problem with your router. The next few lines might suggest a problem woth your ISP.
Each line shows a name for an IP address. Are any of the first few showing high pings?

Sry m8 - I wont be much help.
The numbers in the first line should be about 2 ms. The second and third should be under 50ms each.
If the problem started when you got a new router then perhaps that's it. Try plugging straight into the modem to see if it helps. Tonight, I'll pm you some links to another forum that discussed this.

Someone else might have a better idea but it's unusual to have such high numbers at each stage. The high number from your PC to your router is suspicious. Try connecting straight to the modem, and test again.
If that doesn't change anything, I suggest ringing your isp and asking them to 'ping' you or check your connection remotely. Also, google: talk talk forum latency etc you might find some useful info (try www.cableforum.co.uk).
In game you're likely to notice it being 'choppy', i.e. not smooth. Lag makes it difficult for you to frag (by the time you shoot, the target will have moved). But luckily this also makes it difficult for you to get shot.

Hi mate... I think I might have found the prob if not the fix yet.I have 2 pcs in my house and I just loged in on the other one which has a lot longer lead by about 15 meters or so and the lowest latency on that one is only 28 and the highest is only 188. so i was hoping that it was only a faulty lead. BUT I JUST TRIED IT AND THAT MADE NO DIFERENCE.. so im lost and dont know where to look next

Hey everyone Diet said,
(You could check to see if Microsoft Windows Zero Configuration Utility is running your router on the bad PC.
Go to control panel, administrative tools, services and search down for windows zero configuration, then disable it.
I recall it once played havoc with my router. )
I checked this but this utility was running on both computers. But straingley enough when i restarted my pc and loged back into steam all the latencys were about right. And the tracert was fine as well. I can only think that I must have a software conflict some where. have to see how long it stays ok for.
