Been using "Crazybump" to tweak the Bumpmap textures the best I can for a 3D kind of look.
I then save the bumpmap texture to "BGR888 Bluescreen" .VFT format for best 3D quality. (As DXT5 format is bad for quality bumpmaps)
I also put a $detail on top of the texture for extra small details. In Hammer I set the "Cubemaps" settings at "256" for best reflections.
Then tweak the "$envmaptint" in the .vmt to adjust the texture reflections for 3D look.

I've not played around with "ssbump" yet but plan to at some point.
