PostPosted: Thu Feb 02, 2012 20:29    Post subject:  Upgrade help

Can you help me out with deciding how to upgrade.

At the moment i have a e8400 @3 ghz duo
and a ConRoe1333-D667 with 4gb memory
ATI Radeon HD 5570 1gb

If i change the motherboard and get one with 8gb will this be a good improvement for gaming or is it a case of changing upto a quad core to see any gr8 improvement in gaming performance.

TIA

Changing motherboard to get 8GB ram wont do you almost nothing in gaming, besides loading games faster, launch games or general aplications faster.

Changing your current graphics card is where you would gain big improvement in gaming performance. Changing the rest will barely do anything if u dont change video card since you want gaming performance.

That cpu is still a nice cpu for gaming, 4GB is still enough. Changing video card only would get you a big improvement.

Going for a recent quad core, you will definitily get big improvement in gaming to, but, with that video card, would be about the same...

If you are willing to upgrade, in your situation, i would change board, ram (get the 8GB since right now they are so cheap) new cpu and video card.
May be more expensive than you are willing to pay though... But would be a majot improvement from what you have.

If you dont want to upgrade all that, i would change only the video card.

Cheers

Thanks GMS

I think i would consider the graphics upgrade, but there seems a gr8 lot of difference between big memory or different architecture on smaller memory
Against the card i have would these be any better?

Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6670 2GB GDDR3 PCI-E Graphics Card 11192-11-20G £65

3GB nVIDIA GeForce GT 520 2GB Low Profile HD 3D PCI Express X16 Graphics Card £60

3GB nVIDIA GeForce GT 430 2GB HDMI 1.4a DVI VGA HD 3D CUDA PhysX Graphics Card £80

thanks for the help Embarassed

I would stay away from Sapphire cards because of drivers.
I remember I had driver problems and contacted them and got a reply like.

"Our college students are doing their best on driver fixes" Laughing
This was a very long time ago but put me off Sapphire XD.

I use the gt430. More streams processors than the 520 and I have no issues with anything. Inexpensive card and works well. Able to game with dual displays l4d2 at max resolution (one being a 55" LCD) with good fps. I can even stream HD to one while working on the other. It's a nice bang for the buck card.

First thing, dont choose a video card because of the the amount of ram it has.
From those 3, HD6670 definitly. its much faster than then both of those from Nvidia.
Im not that familiar with UK prices ( £ ) but that GT430 seems overpriced, with near that money, i think u can get a GTS450 or GTX550, wich is way faster than a GT430 and maybe cost you more 10 or 15 £. If you can post me a link with a shop i could advise you better.

Have a look at this benchmark, will give you a better ideia of all the cards that we are talking here:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_6670/6.html

Note that Bad Company 2 is much heavier then hl2dm, so im trying to show you a better overall improvement in games and not just hl2dm.

Saphire doesnt make video card drivers. You should never get drivers from vendors site/CD, but directly from manufactorer site (nvidia site or AMD/ATI site) But yea, i imagine.. lol.

I tend to browse ebay to get an idea and when i have narrowed it down to a single item them google for best price

Going with the gts450 on ebay there seems to be alot of different types of this one card.

GIGABYTE NVIDIA GTS450 1GB 128BIT DDR5 FAN DUAL DVDI HDMI PCI-E GRAPHICS CARD £70 (new other - box damage but unused)

2GB Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 PCI Express Graphics Card DDR3 PCI-E With DVI HDMI £88

Palit 1gb Geforce Gts 450 Ddr3 Pci-E Graphics Card £77

Gainward GeForce GTS 450 2GB 2048MB GDDR3 Graphics Card £84

Is this the sort of thing i should be looking at, just want to spend about £80.
Currently playing x3 albion prelude and LA Noire on 1900 x1080 and the poor computer is struggling

Don't have to go with the gts450 but just picked it as a good fps from GMS link

That gigabyte would be a nice deal. it has a good cooler, fresh and quiet.

Avoid Palit and Gainward.

You may find an HD5770 around that price, if you prefer to go with ATi/AMD. Wich is a tiny bit faster than the GTS450.

80£ for the GT430 is way overpriced..

Cheers

These guys are steering you right, if you're going to do a new processor don't buy a new one unless you get the i5 2500, it's super efficient and even overclocks itself (sorta) it's very stable and very powerful.

Can any one see anything better, i can't really go much more money than this???

At the time they did. (Saphire version of ATI Catalyst Control)
Bad times as the ATI version was not compatible. Laughing

I think you have found the best deal, that card is said to be reliable, most of the time with a deal like that it's not stable/reliable.

Go for it.

You and me both.

Have you considered a solid state hard drive? The difference is massive.

When i put in my new graphics card (double height) forgot that this would cover the pci express x1 slot, ordered a flexible riser card/cable. To get this to fit into the slot and fit graphics card i had to file the male section down and cut the slot so it went in deep enough to just allow graphics card to locate. Then when i go to fit sound card onto the female end of the cable, this now sticks up high than the motherboard slot so had to pack out fixing section of the case to get sound card fixed in. Rolling Eyes
Fun and games but now have a fairly good gaming system again Cool

Read a article on the solid state HDD and they were saying that a 60-70gb hdd is plenty for the operating system and several games, sound and graphics drivers. All the rest of the programs are then load on a separate sata drive, giving best gaming performance - saving money now

They make me jealous. Playing league of legends you get to watch your team and the opposing teams load times and you can always tell who has a SSD.

Average loading time without a SSD is roughly 25 seconds, average load time with is 3.

They have come down substantially in price but it is still a "tall order", keep an eye out for those deals.

I have always think that SSD was born dead, storage capacity and price which are to be considered as a regression not as a progression for consumer storage application.
Five years later, not much has been done in the world of the SSD except maybe the number of manufacturers which was supposed to be in favor of the price competitiveness, although in reality there is only one flash memory manufacturer (maybe 2), so monopole. Which lead to the same speech from SSD manufacturers, expensive to produce so have to keep price high, in order to compensate they provide stickers with it.
At computer's universe, 5 years are an eternity.
The only positive result for the consumer is that HDD manufacturers had to keep it up, mainly increasing plate capacity up to 3 Tb, high density and then forcely data trasfer rate.

Whatever, it will be time to have a real change, HDD seems to have reached their speed limit (not even sure) but offer an excellent price/Gb, as for the SSD it offers an incomparable data transfer rate (reading mode not in writing mode) but seems to never drop down in term of price and are completely out of affordness for the everyday consumer.

Therefor Laser-switched magnetic storage should do the trick:
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/117415-laser-switched-magnetic-storage-is-1000-times-faster-than-current-hard-drives
http://gizmodo.com/5883352/how-a-laser-could-make-your-hard-drive-1000-times-faster

Surely, SSD prices are kept up in purpose and until it doesn't have a real challenger, it will never drop down in price, just for that they can keep it up in their stores or do the world largest SSD Raid for the posterity.

My steam folder alone consumes 100GB on average... i would need a 240GB/256GB SSD at least... So its a no go for me with current prices..

Their performance is amazing, specially now with sata 3 interface.
But i must agree with Osiris..

They should be way more cheap by now.

for those considering ssds or who own ssds here are some tips:

-use the s-ata interface of your motherboards chipset, not any additional chips like marvel. Even if this means having to limit your speed to s-ata 2 instead of s-ata 3. onboard chipset s-ata is usually faster outside of benchmarks. external pci-e cards are supposedly not good either.

-don´t use raid. If you use raid you can´t use TRIM (cleans used space on the ssd, without TRIM your speed will eventually get a lot slower). Get a bigger SSD or use 2 SSDs separately.

-use an AHCI driver, this is crucial for TRIM to work.

-don´t fall for the high performance figures of some ssds like revoltec revodrive, they aren´t that good and often slower than ssds that look slower on paper.

-size recommendations:
-80gb is good for windows and a few games
-128gb will fit some more
-256gb is the preferred choice for those who like to have many games installed
-512gb is unnecessary for most and rather expensive

I started with 128gb but got a second one because games are really starting to get big these days, 128gb fill up pretty quicky. If you have a lot of games you want installed and/or don´t want to spend a lot of money you can buy a smaller ssd and only put windows, your programs and your games where quick loading matters on the ssd and the rest on a regular hdd. For windows and programs alone 40gb can be enough, 64gb would be good for 2-3 games.

some recommended ssds:
-Crucial M4
-Samsung 470
-Intel 510
-OCZ Vertex 3
-Adata S511
-Intel 320
-Samsung 830
