New Camera
Hi
I have a problem. I want to buy a new compact camera. HD recording and low light sensitivity is very important to me.
My problem is that I have some friends who will laugh and me and call me a "prick" for buying a Sony DSC-WX1. So, any alternatives to it? Low light and HD recording are the important factors.
Thanks for the help. _________________

Both with Back-illuminated CMOS up to ISO 3200, HD at 720p, and a VGA recording mode at 240 FPS for slow motion effect. _________________ Allez allez, enlève ta culotte et déboutonne mon pantalon...

Thanks Gorgeous. The second might do (the first wouldn't). But the second isn't available yet and I suspect it's a bit pricey fro a compact. For that money I would probably be better off with a powershot.
Low light and HD are key because let's face it, I'm facing Winter and indoors for a while. I hear Canon attracts undesirables also. _________________

There are advantage and inconvenient for both.
Price will be the same, and the Ixus 1000 isn't the upgrade of the 300.
They do feature the same thing except these difference:
Ixus 300 has a max aperture of 2.0 (at 28mm) which mean it will gather 2x more light than the Ixus 1000 with a max aperture of 3.4 (at 36mm).
So Ixus 300 will be the winner in low light.
Ixus 1000 has a range of 36 - 360 mm a bit less wider but a lot more at telezoom (that's also for why its aperture has been reduced).
Ixus 300 has a range of 28 – 105 mm a bit wider but lacking at telezoom.
Ixus 1000 is the winner in all around application.
Ixus 300 will also do the job if the shots are indoor.
The max shutter speed is faster for Ixus 1000, but this will have no impact for your usage.
And it seems like Ixus 1000 feature a 1080p HD video recording, when the Ixus 300 has a 720p, good luck with storing/editing a 1080p footage... You will probably end using the 720p res on the Ixus 1000, also 1080p on such little lens couldn't be execptionnal.
Ixus 1000 is the winner if you'r going for 1080p.
PowerShot is another range, most of them are bigger except the S95, which is the size of the Ixus, featuring the same as Ixus 300 but with a lot more manual control (and more 'pro') and a CCD sensor instead of CMOS, this doesn't matter for the photo but will be better for the movie.
Also may be more expensive than the Ixus, surely, but is the ultimate pocket-camera.
That would be my pocket-camera. _________________ Allez allez, enlève ta culotte et déboutonne mon pantalon...
"1080i Full HD movies", Sony are good with tricking customer, 1080i isn't Full HD, 1080p is, 1080i is the quality equivalent of 720p, actually interlaced video mode can't be better than progressiv, so 720p will still give a better quality of video.
And if you'r looking for an HDMI output, don't waste your time, there isn't, it's Sony, they'll sell you an optionnal adapter for 80€.
Good luck with it, this remember me the choice of a GPS. _________________ Allez allez, enlève ta culotte et déboutonne mon pantalon...

It's a bit unfair to mention the GPS. I think I'll buy a kindle instead. _________________

all the 10 mega pixel high sensitivity sensors in the canon's are made by sony. It is used by many camera manufacturers. Sony as a camera maker is hit and miss. After they acquired konica-minolta they released a nice slr line, and now the new mirrorless slr's like the nex 3 and nex 5. Osiris's suggestions are very nice. If you want a camera that is a bit bigger and has hd (720p) recording you could take a look at the powershot s95, it's a beauty. Never trusted the sony p&s, the canon's always killed them when it came to picture quality. _________________

Indeed, Digic 4, Canon lens, connections and body finition is doing the big difference. _________________ Allez allez, enlève ta culotte et déboutonne mon pantalon...
