No more ingame sound since Valve update of 17.11.2006 |
|
Valve released a wonderfull update this 17 november 2006.
It restrict the server running command to the client.
Which mean, no more headshot sound, rampage, humilation, killing spree and all that was making this game much fun.
For those who would like to listen those sound again and enjoy HL2 at the most.
Type: cl_restrict_server_commands 0 inside the console.
Or add the line to your launch option.

Valve OMG
Someone over there seriously needs to actually play the game, are they sane??
Update:
I have written an easy guide to using the command window to do this for my clan, just in case anyone doesnt know how to do it properly, im sure a few of the people that visit here after seeing your server ads will have same problem so here's the link.
http://z11.invisionfree.com/KCClan/index.php?showtopic=27
Hope it helps some of you
Orisis, can you let me know if you know where im going wrong with the launch options, it does not seem to work by doing that, for me anyway
I will write a second thread for this once i know how!

I didn't try the Launch option alternative, but by the console it works fine.
Also more than just disabling the sound, it disable a lot of others features like reserved slots, server redirection (when a server is full) etc etc.
Valve didn't find something clever than setting the defaut of this new variable to 1 instead 0. Which mean, beginners will not be able to enjoy the game like before since they will not be able to perform the console command.

KCs will help |
|
Ive asked the KCs to spread the word of this horrible game update, and hopefully can they can help make it comman knowledge on how to fix it. I dont know any player that would rather loose these features, it makes no sense, and im gonna voice my opinion with Valve also.
Grrrrrr

This update is complete and utter madness. the sounds are not trivial, but a really important part of the game.
Thanks for the solutions.

Great, Valve wastes thier time "fixing" something that works, rather than fixing the crashbug instead. BTW can you put it in the autoexe too?

Thanks
EDIT you can also put alias commands in the autoexec which are for connecting to servers when Steams favorites screw up (another thingy they could have fixed) see this thread http://forum.tsgk.com/viewtopic.php?highlight=alias&t=194

That's a shame .... How valve could destroy his own game like this ! They are completely nuts ; these sounds were very important for me ( except the headshot sound ) , I like to have adrenaline when I reach holy shit !

Why is Valve destroying it's own game??
Is there a good reason for this?

They have destroyed 3th party plugin compatibility.
So they don't care, as those parts of the game wasn't from the original game.

Ok, thx for the info .
They should care . If I didn't like this game so much and didn't get this info in time, I would maybe stop playing it... . And when I would go to a store to buy a new game, I wouldn't buy any title from this publisher anymore. This cant be good for their immage . But it seems to me that they dont even care.
What will be their next stunt

There's a petition going around requesting Valve turn turn back on the update... see here:
http://www.generaldiscussion.com/index.php?showtopic=11462&st=0&gopid=162488&#entry162488
To fix:
Edit c:/program Files/valve/steam/steamapps/playername/half-life 2 deathmatch/hl2mp/cfg/config.cfg with notepad
Find cl_restrict_server_command "1" and replace 1 with 0. Then save

I disagree with this petition.
The problem isn't to have cl_restrict_server_command "0" by defaut instead "1".
The problem is that the client must respect a variety of commands sent by the server as "disconnect", "connect" and all others command that don't mess with the client config.
Having cl_restrict_server_command "0" by default will just fix the problem for a while. Then everyone will know having it at "1" will give them the immunity against all server commands.
The problem must be fully fixed and right now.
cl_restrict_server_command "0" must be the default and cl_restrict_server_command must not block vital server commands whatever "0" or "1".

Fair enough... But the petition also asks
Quote: |
We also request that you consider input from the administrator community before any future major changes that may have an impact on the gaming communities that we foster. These changes unnecessarily threaten the very communities we work so hard to build, which not only benefits the gaming community, but Valve itself. |
Your point...

Then everyone will know having it at "1" will give them the immunity against all server commands. |
Very true...

what are the privileges of 1 that it would be considered better than 0?

1 or 0 is a switch. Setting 1 turns off server admins having abilities like those Osiris mentioned earlier. It also stops certain abuses that some admins used to change clients' configs. But, a lot of these abilities are necessary for ordinary and proper administration (Osiris' point).
The problem now is that even if Valve switch back, people now know how to stop admin abilities... I think?
Anyway - I have my 'Holy Shit' back... if only I could reach it.

Valve Updates |
|
Hi all,
Firstly apologies for my lack of posts. Im currently moving house and also in the middle of setting up my own business, so I am only being able to squeeze in short lengths of time to play HL2 DM.
Anyways turning off those sounds makes the game less fun.
Sorry Valve, but that stinks turning them off and im going to come down to your HQ and stick you all!

Good news.
Valve has think about its last update and made some correction today (sound like they finaly listened the admin community):
Quote: |
Added cvars to let the server prevent clients setting unreasonable network settings: sv_mincmdrate, sv_maxcmdrate, sv_client_predict, sv_client_interpolate, sv_client_interp, and sv_client_cmdrate_difference
Allow servers to execute the "play" command on clients.
Added an interface to allow servers to query most cvar values on the clients. |
The sounds are back whatever the value of cl_restrict_server_commands.
Also the servers get back the power they should have to control players abusing some values on the config file (ex: players bouncing crazy on physics).
Unfortunatly some features like Reserved slots still do not work.

Cool.
If I have cl_restrict_server_command "0" , does that give admin full functionality e.g. reserved slots or is it much more complicated than that? Also, is there any changes to our configs from our end that would help TSGK admin?

cl_restrict_server_command "0" is the solution.
cl_restrict_server_command "1" still a pain in the ass for server admins.
