Can;t play source games after Win 7 upgrade |
|
I posted this on the Steam forums - perhaps folks here might have an idea...
I upgraded from Vista 64 Ulitmate to Windows 7 64 Ultimate and am now no longer able to play these source based games (so far): HL2DM & TF2.
At launch, I get the message HL2.exe has stopped working with the following details:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: hl2.exe
Application Version: 0.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 4445c334
Fault Module Name: hdl.dll
So far I have:
- Checked drivers
- Verified game files integrity (this did seem to fix L4D2)
- Uninstalled games & reinstalled
- Uninstalled steam & reinstalled
- Turned off any internet security apps
I've looked around the web and forums and haven't found anything useful to fix this. I'm stumped. I feel like I'm missing something obvious. Any answers?

I've done a fresh install of Win 7. Wiped all my stuff (most of which I have backed up). It appears to be the only real way of getting everything to work together.

upgrading just calls for trouble in my opinion, IŽd always do a fresh install. most windows related problems like that can be cured by a reinstall. those kind of problems are just not worth the troubleshooting as it will not lead you anywhere most of the time. if something is badly wrong and there is no answer on google, reinstall. you just need to preorganize the reinstall. I usually create folders and put everything necessary like drivers and programs in them before so that I can just install them immediately after windows has installed and return to normal use as quickly as possible.

delete all files here
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps
steam uninstall leaves some files if I remember right.
