That one is just slightly over 5lbs. We also had one that weighed in at 6.5 lbs but its crusher claw was missing and it had just cast its shell. In prime condition and with both claws that one would not have been far off the 8lb mark. Unfortunately it died shortly after we caught it - it was delicious
I have see one weighing 10.5 lbs and one at 14lbs. I also know of one that some divers brought up that was 19lbs.
Its a shame to take anything over 8lbs because it probably has taken 20 years to grow that size. The bigger they are, the longer between casting their shell. Once you are into 10lb + you are probably in the region of 50 yrs old.
Where I stay the water is cold and it is as about as far north as the lobster will live. They are very slow growing and live in virtually pollution free water. As a result they taste is vastly superior to the ones you get in the English Channel for example. They are highly prized and all the commercially caught ones fetch premium prices and end up on the market in Europe. Lobsters and shelfish are shipped alive from Shetland once a week in vivier trucks.

I recon that once the get over the 6lb mark they are only use for the flavour in things such as lobster bisque.
They also lose value the biger they are. Up to 1kg (2.2lbs) they are select
and worth about 27 dollars a kilo at this time of year. Larger, they drop to
18 dollars a kilo. The main reason for this is what you can reasonably serve up as a single or double portion. On top of that, the price to the
customer would become prohibitive. A standard single fish portion would
cost arround 100 dollars (0.5kg). The larger fish are used for dishes such
as thermidor and newberg where the shell is sometimes used for presentation.
Really large fish are not normally eaten but used as a centre piece in the
likes of a seafood buffet.
This applies to lobster caught in cold water of the particular species I catch
The same creature in warmer waters will grow faster an be edible at a
larger size because it is not so old. Having said that the smaller ones taste better because they are more agile and able to catch a wider variety of food.
The larger ones are slower and their diet becomes restricted to the likes of crab and fish carrion.

A complete waste...that is.....
Just an example of how humans waste wildlife, and resources, to make money.
We kill a creature, that we dont even need for a sustainable life, and present it in a plate, just to look good....
Sorry, i dont have nothing against you... and i dont wanna be here like an wildlife protection guard or something.....
Just saying my opinion. i understand that you like to catch lobster by your own.
The thing is, when i see those industrial seaships, that catch tons of fish and, crabs, lobsters, etc. and 1 or 2 tons of those animals, are just wasted, killed, and trowed again to the sea..... not even consumed.
And for what? for that selection you are telling so they can profit more with the end consumer.
And that just pisses me off....

You were about to get an in detail reply on sustainable fisheries and EU fishing regulations early this morning but my home ISP went offline.
Yes , you are entitled to your opinin and I would be quite happy to engage in a debate on the subject but this is the fun section of the forum.
I have to assume that those posting in this thread are interested so I am giving more detailed answers to the questions asked of me.
At least this thread has developed without any flaming so I will not
call you a Growling Mad Veggie or set a former TSGK member and avowed veggie hater about with a stunstick.
