I started DM with a Microsoft Intellimouse that was a good 3 years old. Once the side buttons started to get loose and the mouse wheel wonkey, I picked me up a Logitech 518 (and gave the old mouse to me mum). I was looking at the G5 but at the time it only had one side button. Given that my two side buttons were GG and crouch, that was unacceptable. Very nice mouse, that 518. Although I would sometimes hit the sensitivity change buttons when using the mouse wheel. Quite a harsh change while enjoying a beer or six.
Then one day Ghosty's mouse was acting up when we were having a friendly game of explode the head. I couldn't have such a fine player on a failing mouse so I had Newegg send him a shiny G5. After that I was all like, "well I just sent a dude on the internets a mouse, so I need to get a new one too." So I got myself a G9 because it had some fancy crap that I probably won't use very much but sounded nifty. My aim has gotten better since the G9, be it from the mouse or from practice.
Funny thing is, I'm going to slap my old 518 into my work computer and crank the sens up as high as I can go on the mouse and in windows. Should be good times, I'll be the only analytical chemist in the midwest that can go from corner to corner in an inch or two ! I'd say it's to help my gaming, but it's really just to decrease my efficiency !

I used an IntelliMouse for a while, then I switched to the Lachesis. I hated the shape.. it was meant for lefties as well as righties. It was too small for my hands so I bought a DeathAdder and I love it.

I love mice! Razer makes awesome mice that cater for everyone's needs
the deathadder's shape has been taken from their project the habu with microsoft. which is basically and intelimouse married to a razer mouse.
The mice Razer is famous for are finger tip controlled mice. The Boomslang back in the day and the Diamondback which got an update as the Diamondback 3G and the awesome Lachesis! Which i love!
The new Mamba is basiclly a suped up deathadder, it has a 3.5G laser sensor which as Breen said has a 5200 DPI. it doesnt make sense as the deathadder was designed to be played at low sensitivity, so did the mamba as they have the same shape :S.
Mice and mousematts make a big difference. it doesn't matter if they are expensive or not, what makes you comfy is what works

I agree with that 100%. I actually downgraded when I bought my last mouse(Logitech G3) because it was smaller and fit my hand better. Unfortunately it just died so back to my Diamondback

My first mouse for hl2dm was PC Line, but after half a year the inside trigger buttons went to dust. Then I got a mx518 and has not failed me yet. The 2 button g5 looks good.

My first mouse for DM was a Microsoft Intellimouse which was ok - this then got upgraded to the original G5.
Awesome mouse of which I went through 3 of em (I break them in about 6 months due to my settings).
Then got the revised G5 (no: 4!) and it tee'd me off no end due to the drivers - my sensitivity would alter in game randomly
I then spent ages tracking down a new original G5 which I still have (it lives!) but recently I grabbed a Roccat Kone as I liked the look of it and the fact it has loads of buttons:
http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/peripherals/roccat-kone/1
At first I loved it, great software drivers and a lovely feel. Kinda two minds now tho. I'm great in L4D with it but recently tried DM and found myself struggling to hop and to catch objects. That said its been a year since I played properly so it could very well be me!

ON TOPIC: My poor mouse has finally gone to the great mouse graveyard in the sky, four years of abuse is not too bad for €5.
Can anyone recommend a decent, cheap, laser mouse for gaming. Is the mx518 any good? Cheap is the operative word here as I'm completely broke until the end of the month.
And just to keep up with the spam...

Marry a woman with small hands if you want it to look big.

The Mamba is going to be wireless... well the first ever gaming grade (1ms) wireless mouse, no idea how it's going to compare to the Death Adder's 3G optical sensor in terms of the amount of inches per second the 3.5G? (where did that info come from) laser will be able to read.
Who cares any way? it's retailing at 130 euros

I have been forced to throw out the Deathadder because right click was totaly dead. I bought a Logitech G5 today, but could someone tell me how to use MOUSE5 in-game please? When I trigger it to get the .357, it decreases DPI and doesn't give any .357 at all

I don't have a G5 but I suspect you've mapped it using the GUI in HL2DM. You're also probably running the G5 software? If so then that software is overriding your hl2dm mouse 5 mapping. So you could stop launching the G5 software (cause probs if you like changing dpi in game or use scripts) or you could trying mapping the mouse 5 in the g5 software to key eg the letter p key. Then in hl2dm map the letter p key to the command you want the mouse 5 to be.

This is my Bad boy
I know its crap, but its the best mouse I ever used for DM, my first one broke after a year and a half, I brought a much betta one and hated it, felt too big, couldn't get the sensitivity right, so I nicked the same mouse from work (theres about 20 of them, if my current one broke I'd do the same again ). By everybody elses standard its a pile of crap, but I lovvvvvvvvvve it
(This is probably the only product from Microsoft I have soo much love for)
