Graphics Card |
|
So, I'm playing L4D and all of a sudden red dots appear, then freeze.
So I run, nTune stability test. After a while error message occurs telling me it has to shut down that application.
So, my graphics card has died... hasn't it?

Red spots are called artifacts, unfortunately they are usually caused by: a) overheating or b) the card dying.
Have you tried cleaning out the case with compressed air to improve the flow through the case?
Did you change any of the settings, e.g. overclock the memory or processor on the card?
Might be some help here mate

maybe it´s getting too hot? try blowing the dust in the cooler away. my old x850xt needed to be cleaned every 2 months or so or it would get too hot.

Thanks. I opened it up and the inside wasn't too dusty. Temp levels are fine at 56 degrees. So I think the card is dying. Can't even get windows to display.
Will have a look around for something tomorrow...

So I've ordered an radeon:
http://www.dabs.ie/productview.aspx?QuickLinx=58GN
Unfortunately my choice is limited due to my psu wattage of 400w. Ah well. Should be as good as my old nvidia 8800 gtx. I hope.

It might be worth checking out the psu 12v supply to the card.
According to this, the minimum psu power output for a 9800 GTX is 450W
http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_9800_gtx_us.html
I have just purchased a BFG 9800 factory overclocked 1mg version and I need a minimum of 570W.
Also , take a look on Amazon UK you can get a replacement 9800GT for just over the £100 mark and the GTX at arround £130 .
edit - its still 450W despite changing into an 8800 GTX

Thanks Zog. Yeah, my preference would have been to replace like for like. I had that card for 2.5 years. I think the new thing should be fine, maybe even better.
God I'm bored...

Well... yes in terms of game invites. But there's still a high risk of innappropriate language and lewdness on my behalf.

So, I haven't been on much lately because of my gfx card troubles... I got a new card, but I'm still having a lot of problems playing. In short, the card is too good for my PC
During my forced absence I spent a lot of time browsing the internet. I was worried that a new gfx card would be too much for my PSU (power supply unit). And I thought I could buy a new one. I'm not very technically gifted so this would be a big thing for me.
I got chatting with a certain technical guru, and before I knew it I became convinced that I could build a new PC. So I set about this and sourced the components for a fairly good PC, certainly one that was better than the thing I have. I even read a lot of reviews on sites (there's even a Raf who gave feedback on komplett.ie - is that you Raffa?) something that would normally be abnormal for me.
Further chats with my technical guru friend resulted in me convincing myself that I could actually build a PC capable of flying half the population of Cork to the moon. Why Cork? Well, because they're a bunch of langers.
So, I've now gone and bought things left right and centre. It's amazing how once you start, you lose all sense of control. I won't have a clue how to put it all together, but it could be an enjoyable epic fail. I'll keep you posted. The first item arrived today in work. I proudly showed it to my colleagues, most of whom said "Wats dat?". This concerns me a bit because they're in IT. Anyway, behold Diet's new mobo, the Asus Rampage Extreme thingy:
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=1&model=2367&l1=3&l2=11&l3=640&l4=0
I'm currently wearing it around my neck as I've nothing to plug it in to.
Expect a few Help! posts from me in the future. Any questions/debates around my system will be met with complete ignorance and half-baked replies.

For every action there's suposed to be an equal/oppositte reaction.
This isn't the case for spending money on computer, when the other half finds out how much you have spent, she'll expect to spend at least a 1/3 more on clothes
Good luck with your build which is the easy part, its getting drivers for all the new gear

Aha! That's the genius of it. I buy a PC bit by bit!
Unfortunately, the pieces are all arriving together... jost got this

and this

Missus suspects something. I've hidden most of it in my wardrobe.

its the best to get someone to do it with you the first time, then after that any other pc you build will be easy, its just the first time where you have no clue about it and where it can be tricky. I asked someone to build my first one, after that I built my pc I´m using now, rebuilt my old pc a few times and 2 pcs for friends.

Nope, not me. I have a book lying around that walks you through putting all the parts together. PM your address and I'll send it to you
EDIT: At least I used to have one, seems to have vanished from my bookshelf. Sure message me on steam or msn if you are having any problems

So everything has arrived. I have the power. I have the technology. I even have a step by step guide on how to build it including a line that more or less says "If at any point something goes wrong, it means you haven't read my instructions properly, dumbass".
Only problem now is that the cpu I bought for €410 is now available for €350. Should I return and wait another week maybe more or should I just shrug, take out my hammer and start banging away with gusto?

Fair enough, I like to bang away with gusto.
