If I were a gamer only, onboard would've been good enough for me but audio quality is very very important to me.
I have 5 mp3players and 3 pairs of headphones and a few pairs of earbuds I have collected on my search to the best sounding portable audio rig.
In my computer, I have a decent dedicated soundcard (would have to check to see the name tho, I'm not at home now) and a creative xmod (type of external sound card).
I connect the pc to the xmod and the xmod to a technics amplifier and the amplifier to 3 pairs of speakers ^^

This post on another topic makes me ask folks...

What MP3 player do you use or recommend?

I've used creative hard drives since they cam out. Only problem witth them is that they die (no matter how careful you are). Shimmy, the new ones look gay (and no offence to the gay community).

I use Ipod and Itunes, and there is a neat little program called NoteBurner that removes all DRM protection from a Track then converts the file to MP3 while retaining all the tag data. Means even if you have another MP3 player you can still use ITunes and just convert your tracks.

I've found an ipod with rockbox on it to be the best. Archos ones are good too, but a little feature heavy and expensive. If you just want one to put a few songs on (2gs or less) buy a generic flash based one. They are the best value for money.

Bacon your one looks nice Smile

thanks, it was a suprising $100, or about 69€.

4 GB, mpeg 4 compatible.

Samsung is what I'd suggest to anyone. Apple adds too many bells nd whistles. Just keep it simple.

I never suggested using the apple software. Rockbox allows you to drag and drop music on to ipods so there is no need to use itunes to manage your ipod. It also allows you to play flac files, doom and gameboy roms. And it comes with breakout Very Happy

What kind of mp3player you will be satisfied with depends a lot on what you search for in the player. I now own 5 of them, and have tried a lot of them.

Sound quality : Cowon. No competition in this one, seriousely cowon's sound quality is brilliant. The cowon D2 has an SDHC extention slot (up to 32 GB SDHC cards fit in this) and can be found in 2,4,8 and 16 GB appearances. It has a very good touchscreen, can survive a drop or two and plays videos in high quality. FM radio is built in, and also DAB (=digital radio) in the DAB models. You can play flash games and movies and read and input text, watch pictures and for some random reason it has a built in dictionary. The skins are also fully customizable and backgrounds are those of your choice. Rockbox is 80% completed for this model. This is a premium product so you pay a premium price. It's my main player.

Cheap : Sandisk. The sansa e200 (2, 4,8 GB) series are very decent players with a good build quality, nice looks, decent build quality and microSDHC extention slot. It also supports the amazing alternative operating system rockbox. The sansa clip has less features, but has a sound quality that equals that of the cowon players. It's very cheap too. Another sandisk model is the sansa fuze, a sort of fusion between the cool features of the sansa e200 series and the good audio quality of the clip.

User friendly : ipods. If you don't know anything about technology and just want a truly simple interface, a 200% stable system and acceptable sound, even though you pay a lot more than reasonable, these are pretty good. Itunes sucks tho, bigtime. Don't buy an ipod shuffle tho, the sansa clip is cheaper and better on every feature.

For sound quality the sad fact is that earbuds bundled with a player are always cheap and pretty crap sounding things. To really enjoy a player I think it's needed to buy some decent earbuds or headphones.

Other than this brief post (I don't have much time right now) I can say that I like Cowon, Sony (those without sonicstage, ewww) and Sandisk products most if it comes to mp3players. There are other pretty decent brands like Iriver, Archos and Samsung but I like the three named above more. I used to be a creative fan and still am a bit, as the zen vision M was an amazing player, but lately, they've been producing pretty bad quality players in my opinion.

I myself, have (in ranking of preferrance)

Cowon Iaudio D2 (4GB + 2GB)
Cowon Iaudio X5 20 GB (now broken)
Sandisk Sansa E250 (2GB)
Sandisk Sansa Clip (sold)
Creative zen vision M (broken)
Creative zen nano plus
Apple Ipod Video 5.5G
Cheapass Brand 512 MB player

Good posts. TY Controllerboy - food for thought there.

I want a flash based player (moving parts = trouble) with excellent sound so maybe cowon is worth investigating.

I was considering http://ie.europe.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=17811 the creative player. At least creative are based in Ireland so I never have problems with replacing them. But unfortunately, I always have to replace them. The xfi thing strikes me as a little bit gimmicky - and likely to be a software emulator.

Apparently the earbuds it comes with are excellent in their own right. But I do have good earphones incuding noise cancellation (Sony and Seinheiser). Also, I find the 'in ear' earbuds to be better than others.

To hell with video. I hate all that complicated crap. Gimme me sounds baby, me sounds!

I think this would be a better choice to take Cowon even if it is more expensive, beacause the creative Xfi is not a real chips "X-fi" but it's just an emulation of this chip on the Mp3 player.

Prefer take the Cowon if you have money Very Happy Very Happy

Zogette has a Philips which as far as I can see is indestructable. Laughing
I have an ipod shuffle which runs for ages on the battery charge because it has no display.
I also have an ipod nano copy which has more features than the machine it was cloned from. Its 2mb and cost about $40 2 years ago. The same machine at 4mb is about half the price now. I know that you all want the best
but at the end of the day, its only as good as mp3 and most of the kit is made in the same place by the same people.
I would say shuffle is better on the ear buds but there is little to chose on proper cans.

i dont agree. my mom got an ipod and was compltely clueless. i think for those who are unfamiliar with this technology, an ipod would be too confusing.

lol, 16 GB memcards for PSP ? Where do you get those :O I thought sonycrapcards only go to 8 GB max. I have a custom firmware psp too btw, amazing device I agree but it's a bit too big to use as mp3player and I don't really like the sound

I wouldn't really reccomend that one. I won't say it's a bad player but my friend has one and I prefer the X-Fi options off, they only boost the sound volume and don't really add too much imho. I only use the xmod on my computer because it adds a kickass huge sound regulation button anyways Very Happy I could buy it for 20 euro instead 80 so yeah.

The creative support is pretty good , I agree on that one. I have a webcam and there was a faulty CD-rom bundled. I sent a mail to their Europese headquarters in Ireland and a few days later I already had a new CD. They dissapointed me a bit on my zen vision M tho, there was a factory mistake in the product which caused the screen to break without reason. I sent them mails and all they said it was all my own fault. After that, I decided to open it up myself and see if I couldn't fix it. Off course that voided warranty. Three months after I broke it open, then, they decided to acknowledge the mistake and replace all broken units, but there had gone my warranty already three months early Rolling Eyes

That's a quite good player indeed. I like the cowon players more, but if you really want a Sony, this one is good. Some people say it's sound is crap because it's not really natural, but I haven't noticed when I used it in the local retailer. You will lose quite some soundquality when you use the bluetooth headset tho, as the connection technology is still in full development. It's handy however Very Happy

The theoretical capacity of a sony m2 card is 32 gb which is impressive
I got a 8 gb card for my psp for around 50 euros, which wasnt a bad deal at all,but seeing that most compact mp3 players are smaller than a psp battery,i think i'd stick to my zen stone plus with speaker for portability and psp is just for gaming.

I think there 3 months old i've seen them in game, for now 16gb is the highest size out for a PSP SD memory card. Wink
