Onboard Sound (Motherboard) Or Dedicated SoundCard ? |
|
Hello
Just a thought that occured to me, we always have discussions about GFX and FPS and stuff like that, but do you use for your sound?
I personally use a dedicated sound card as I do alot of Music production and could do with the extras processing power for the Sound App, as well as super cool sounding explosions in HL2.
Do you think theres alot of difference between Onboard sound and Standalone cards now?

I've really grown to hate onboard sound cards, they always breakdown. The microphone sound is really bad and they drain a lot of fps. I run a laptop that's two years old and I've recently got the Audigy ZS PCMICA card that boosted my ingame fps by 30-40 fps.
On board sound cards and graphic cards are the bane of all game developers, whoever develops them should be SHOT DEAD! because they suck!

on-board sound sucks I have a maximus formula and even the sound card that comes with it is just a riser card and uses software .
Get a sound card as they use hardware and your CPU has better things to do than make sounds

Very interesting. I have never really thought about a sound card, or how taxing onboard
sound may be on the system. I may be purchasing a card soon.

Onbord-sound is good alternative when u have not so much money.-You can not compare onboard vs soundcard.
I hade a Creative Audigy 2zs and bought for 2month a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Fatal1ty Pro.
And even here are a large differences to hear.

Got to go with aftermarket non integrated sound, it sounds awesome and in hl2dm helps you determine where someone is before you see them.
Onboard drains resources and often overheats, you can get a 24bit sound blaster audigy for $10 US even cheaper overseas and they work really good for the price.

I got an X-FI Xtreme Music. great sound. the 24bit crystalizer makes your music sound a lot better too. for 50-60€ I think its the best card you can buy for games and music. the higher x-fi models have x-ram for sound, but its not really necessary. they also have more connection ports if you need them.

I have a maximus extreme and use the pcie 1 slot card that came with it . I hate on board cards and have always had driver issues with them .
As for DOH MICK saying that the sound card that comes with the asus mobos I think you are a bit wrong on the usage or resources for it.
It uses the pcie 1 slots which are controlled by a different controller than the pcie 2 or gfx card slots so don't sap resources from the important bits LOL.
I spent allot of time looking into this b4 buying mine as I had been told that on board sound cards sapped allot of resources and that the separate ones that come with the mobos are not much better.
In fact the cards that asus use are very good and don't take any where near the resources that they used to.
I have used mine for several months now and am very pleased with it and had no probs with the drivers.
But yea the on board ones used to be really shit, although you are still better to use a separate one or a pcie 1 slot one the on board ones are a bit better that they used to be....
Thats my 2 pence worth LOL

Got a bit dated audigy platinum sitting in abox doing nothing. There were too many wires for the dog to chew and me to trip over. I use the headphones when I am playing serious. Thats not 7.1, straight sterio.
The mobo manafacturers are not going to fit crap to a top rate mobo. They want no conflicts, no hastle.
If you want to spend bucks on things that the human ear cant hear then thats your thing.
Some of you will remember when sound was an issue back in the days of dos based games........................
Going back a while, in the days of vinyl and turntables, cheap amps and bad design, you got what you payed for. Now there is little difference between a budget hifi or expensive sound system. Only the cost.
Yes, some of it may sound better but for those of you who got to raves and rock concerts, the audible damage has been done.
Whats that you said? 44khz sampling rate? Sry cant hear that. I'm old an a bit mutt and jeff.

Integrated sound chips have definitely improved especially over that past two years or so. In my opinion they are ok for most ppl that just use their computers to check email etc. and certainly bring the overall costs down. I personally like good sound from my pc. My current card is the Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty Professional Series. Got the fatal1ty cause the red light on the side of the card matched my pc's internal lights

[ TSF ] LORD DAVROS you just keep using the SupremeFXll I would not like to think how good you would be with your PC running with more fps
I was getting around 150 fps on dm using the SupremeFXll
Since using a xfi card I get into the 900+fps on some maps

If I were a gamer only, onboard would've been good enough for me but audio quality is very very important to me.
I have 5 mp3players and 3 pairs of headphones and a few pairs of earbuds I have collected on my search to the best sounding portable audio rig.
In my computer, I have a decent dedicated soundcard (would have to check to see the name tho, I'm not at home now) and a creative xmod (type of external sound card).
I connect the pc to the xmod and the xmod to a technics amplifier and the amplifier to 3 pairs of speakers ^^

OK MICK
God knows how you get that fps as dm is suposed to be limited to 300 fps any way LOL.
But I did some tests today and disabled my sound drivers and removed my sound card.
Then ran dm up again after a restart . BUt there was no real detectable difference in FPS possibly 3 or 4 gain if you were lucky.
Asl the sound quality from the FXII 7.1 is great

Mick has some mean Bad ass mofo FPS, I'm sure he rents a Super computer at weekends or something. What (Edit FPS not Ping ) do you average on Lockdown original? Thats quite an FPS intensive level.

Mick FTW!
and controller the creative xmod uses the usb interface and emulates everything software wise... so that drains the fps too
