Symantec Security Products Mis-Detecting Steam Games as Malware
9 July 2007
Users of Symantec's security products have recently been finding that they cannot launch Steam-based games. It appears the reason for this, as discussed on the Steam Forums, is that a new update from Symantec is inadvertantly flagging Steam games as trojans. Symantec are aware of the problem and are working on a patch, the only solution at the moment is to disable any background or automatic protection. Note that in general I always recommend (and so do game developers) that users disable all background programs - including security software - when gaming, as they are known to potentially cause conflicts and performance issues.

Well, Avast is good, I use it because it supports XP64.
It takes about 2-2.5seconds to update its virus database. And it does it daily.
Nobody mentioned Avira, its good, free and easy to use (but doesnt support XP 64bit), www.Free-AV.com.

Norton is a virus that is actually paid for by the user. I recommend AVG or Nod32. Neither one will bog down your machine like Norton or Mcafee. I also recommend using AVG or Nod32 along with Spybot S&D and or Lavasofts Adaware. They will both run user initiated scans. The most important thing is that no one antivirus software will get rid of everything. It is better to have one real-time AV software with the other user - initiated ones ran once a week or so. Adaware and Spybot S&D are both labeled as anti-spyware yet they have always had much better virus definitions than most antivirus programs. But this is just IMHO
