My computer's going to hell |
|
Sometime today I am going to have to reformat my computer because of a supposed keylogger. Steam account;Gone. All the games on it;Gone. Soon everything on my computer;Gone. Hopefully we'll be able to get it back but I really doubt it.

Then there's no pont me offering m condolences as you'll be gone.
But I'm sorry for you anyway. Surely McAfee or something should sort it out instead of a format... but maybe you don't have security.
I'd back up my maps, and configs if I were you. Your steam account won't vanish. When you reload steam just use your account details and password. Good luck

Try Raid, HD's just ain't that expensive these days.
McAfee is like pouring treacle on a formula 1 unless you have a dual core. It all depends on what you do with the setup. I have 2. A 3g P4 which I use for the net . Any reasonable old machine can perform that task. The other machine, the core 2 duo, is only for hl2 dm and other gaming.
You don't need to use a resource intensive anti virus for the gaming machine. Under these circumstances, free AVG 7.5 is just fine and I disable it after the initial run.
For the net machine, I don't have Raid. What I have, is a second HD which I periodically back up the main drive with. Only the basics, it does not have to be a large drive. It is disconnected at all times except during the backup.
I know this is probably like H20 of a ducks back for you but, no sympathy, shit happens. When it all goes wrong, I go right back to dos as a starting point with fdisk and reformat, not forgetting mbr and bios.
Not everybody has a house full of computers like me but it is always worth considering retaining the old kit for exclusive net use.
Anybody, feel free to ask for advice for what it is worth. I have spent a lot of time reading technical posts and feel I may have a little bit to offer.

OK so its working to an extent> If you re using XP home or pro, have you tried running system restore. I'm sure you have, but, if not and you are unsure what too do, send me a message and I will give you instructions
