Subject description: crashes

Hi everyone I just got back of holliday to find py pc has gone down. So I decided to go the whole hog and get vista.

BUT I have a big problemb. Sad Sad

If i go to the video settings and change it to wide screen and select the second highest setting for screen resolution it crashes to desk top as soon as I press apply and and when I try to launch hl2dm again it will play the valve video then goto a black screen before crashing to the desk top once again. I have tried everything I can think of to get it to run and even uninstalled the game and rinstalled it . BUT thi didnt work either.

The only way I can find to get hl2dm back is to format my machine then reinstall it from scratch. but if i only change the vedio settings to wide screen and leave the ress on max it seems to play ok though I have not had long to test it .

PLease can someone tell me if there is a fix for this , weather i should bother to tell steam about it or if anyone else has this prob....

that's rather odd my friend. I'm running vista and the game crashes way less than what it used to when running on xp (or maybe osi's coding has gone alot better Razz since then) but try this, go to the hl2 executable file and right click it go to properties/compatibility and select run as windows xp. see if that helps... other than that just update your graphic card drivers and general hardware... that's about it... i guess

hope it works out for you

Im on vista x64 and ive never had a problem with steam or hl2dm. If your using an nvidia card i would reccomend the new drivers, like 156.2 or something like that. Ive noticed quite a boost in fps in most d3d games and ive read people getting as much as 25% increase in most games. I dont have a widescreen moniter so i never tried those settings, but i would reccomend that run at your moniters native res. Oh yeah i do have a new problem in vista i didnt have in xp, sometimes the sound goes out but when i hit the windows key or alt tab to reset the sound my pc locks up and i have to reboot.

Thanks for the help.
I could b wrong but I think it could be because vista looks at your system and sets everything to what it thinks is the best settings . so when i go into hldm options and tell it to set the res from1360x768 to 1280x720 it causes a conflict which crashes the game and damages part of my registry

Vista is a bit unstable for games

wait a couple of months untill microsoft releases some good drivers

(DX10 isnt 100% compatible with DX9 and lower games)
