My age old problem of crap ISPs has taken a twist.

Lately I've found it slow to even view a webpage. It was bad tonight up until 3 minutes ago. Then all of a sudden it's real fast.

Is it safe to assume that my ISP is overloading my line (contention)? I can see no reason for why speed could change so irregulary and quickly unless other users on the loop are connecting/disconnecting. Any thoghts my clever furry friends?

Yes, ISP use shared connection network for local boucle as WAN for all their members.
But good ISP adapt their bandwith in relation with the number of simultanous connected user, i guess it is not the case with your ISP...

Thanks - I needed to check before I speak to them again for the 10th time. My ISP is evil. Like smelly feet.

try running the speedtest and tweaktest. if your speeds are crap let them know. also try bypassing any routers and resetting your modem. you may need a tech at your house to replace the lines or splitters or even the modem could have gone to crap.

hi diet who is your provider there are some companies in england ireland and wales that have a realy bad name for this kind of prob,, namely the share ratio they put you on.
I recently had to ditch toucan cause of there dumb unfare usage policy . ie. you cant download more than 1 gig per month between 6pm and 11pm or they stick you on a 1000 to 1 share ratio which means that at certain times you cant even sign in to msn. and 1 or 2 music tracks will exceed that .... Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Also if it was your share ratio causing the prob a speed test wont show it up cause you still get the 1/2/5/8 or what ever your connaction is rated at its just you get big gaps in between the short bursts of info you recieve...

Hope that helps you identify the prob.

Ps sorry I couldnt stop that meany from smg ing you when you froze cause of this isp prob but i was too busy getting killed by Arcane LOL

Same here,

My ISP really sucks too, during the working hour it's fine I have ADSL2 and my bandwith is simply amazing from 9am to 6pm I have something like 18kpbs and my ping is aroud 35 ms. But after 6 it's like 900 ms and I'm happy if I reach dialup speed connection Confused
I must confess that I have a second ADSL connection, I'm not a geek but for some reasons, I have to for my job, so I can use the other one. The bandwith is not as good as my private one but it's always the same even after 6pm so I just switch and I can play. But it's getting on my nerves, and they don't seem to do something to fix it. The reason it's simply that there too many people connected and that the total bandwith can't handle so many connections when kids are back from school and grab their mouse to frag Wink
That's what happens here in France
PS: the one that sucks is Orange formerly Wanadoo.

It's NTL Ireland (which isn't owned by NTL international). It was nice and steady for a while but then deteriorated. LD - I think your right about the speedtests - they are limited in use.

I won't even begin to complain about their customer service...

I think I'm gonna walk along my street with a pliar and cut the cables into peoples homes Twisted Evil

It sounds to me that you need to look for another provideer also as it sounds like you are on a stupid share ratio as well. first ask them what ratio you are on. 100 to 1 is barely axceptable. If its higher than that or you are caped for downloading too much tell them where to stick it and go elswhere. anything under 70 to 1 is ok but if you want a good connection you idealy want 40 or 50 to 1.
But unfortunatley I dont think that you can find out what you will be on with a providor till you are there. although I know that bt usualy give 70 to1 talktalk usualy give around 40 to1 . and as for the other two I mentoined to DIET dont even go there..........

Ps Hope this helps you all . as youcantell I speak from BAD experiences......

I pay €40 per month for 6mb 14:1 contention. No wonder I can't afford to feed my family and I'm on the game part time.
